Akamai’s DNS service reports issues

Akamai, which offers domain name system services, says it is experiencing problems. There is no guarantee that this is the whole cause of the problem, but it seems to be a part of it, not least because many of the affected sites appear on the customer page.

(Domain name system, or DNS, is something like the phone book or map on the Internet – it matches your computer with the sites it’s looking for.)

“We are aware of a new issue with the Edge DNS service,” reads a message on the status page. “We are actively investigating the issue.”

Widespread power outages probably mean that something has broken in the infrastructure on the Internet

Previous problems like this have not been the result of problems with the companies that run the website – but rather the companies that run the internet.

There was a similar major breach just over a month ago, for example, which was later traced to a problem at Fastly. Even a small problem with one of these companies can very quickly lead to a lot of the internet going offline, since there are a very limited number of organizations that offer infrastructure that supports the entire internet.
