CARY – Epic Games takes a new step forward in creating digital human images that look like the real us. On Wednesday, Epic presented “MetaHumans” through the development engine of Unreal video games
In a “sneek peak”, Epic says users can create “high-fidelity digital people.”
The tool is called MetaHuman Creator, and Epic says it can “give anyone the ability to create a bespoke photorealistic digital human, fully rigged and complete with hair and clothing, in minutes.”
The new development comes after Epic acquired real-time facial animation technology launching Hyprsense in November last year. Hyprsense states that the technology will give “the creators of Unreal Engine the ability to distribute and operate the most advanced character assets, on any platform.”
Watch the video:
“MetaHuman Creator is a cloud-streaming app that takes digital human creation in real time from weeks or months to less than an hour – at an unparalleled standard of quality, fidelity and realism,” said the unreal development team. “Once your character is done, you can export and download it, rigged and ready to be animated in Unreal Engine.”
Achieving “photorealism” was a stated goal for Epic when it unveiled a new version of the Unreal engine last year.
Epic, best known now as the developer of the game Fortnite, has invested heavily in bringing more realism to its Unreal engine, which is one of the most widely used in the video game industry.
Looks like all that research pays off.
