If you’re experiencing a bunch of apps that suddenly crash on your recent Samsung phone, you’re not alone. In the afternoon American time, reports from dozens, when hundreds of users on Samsung subreddit began to come in and complained about apps crashing on their phones, constantly and apparently randomly. It causes some major headaches.
Users of recent Samsung phones – including the Galaxy S20 and S21, Note 20, A50 and A70 series – seem to be most affected. There are widespread reports of the same issue happening with Pixel, Motorola and OnePlus phones, although there may be occasional issues that have nothing to do with the primary issue. Owners of some older Samsung devices, including a J7, report similar issues. The app crashes are not limited to any specific subsets: applications with more or less any function, from any developer, crash repeatedly and without warning.
A few users have reported success with a relatively simple method: uninstalling the latest version of Android System Webview, a small tool that allows apps to render a web page using Chrome without leaving the application. It is used in many different ways, including secure logins and viewing of supporting documentation. Reddit user / u / WatfordHert detailed their method, which is pretty straightforward.
How to fix the latest app crashes
To use WatfordHert̵
Tap the three-point menu at the top right of this screen, then select “Uninstall Updates.” This will not uninstall Android System Webview completely – it is an important component and many apps will stop working without it. Instead, it removes the updates installed from the Play Store and restores it to the version that came with the phone. This is not ideal, but it is better than having a phone that can not go thirty seconds without an app crash.
Press “OK” on the warning that appears and you should be done. If you still see constant app crashes, try restarting your phone.
We can not test this method personally on all the phones that are affected, but several Reddit users report that it works for them. Hopefully, and assuming this is an issue with Android System Webview, a further update will fix the issue soon. If you see the app crashing back, try repeating the steps above – the Play Store may have updated the app automatically without notifying you.
