How to get rid of all the junk in the Windows 10 Start menu

The Start menu is a Windows pillar, introduced with Windows 95. If you want to find a file, launch an app, or put your PC to sleep, this is your place to go.

For many tasks, you can also use handy keyboard shortcuts to get the basics done. Try Windows + L the next time you get up from your computer to lock it without clicking through the menus. Click or click here for a guide to all the best PC shortcuts.

Now let’s talk about rubbish. If you’ve had your computer for a long time, it’s probably full of files you do not need. Press or click to get some easy ways to clean up storage space.

You can also clear the Start menu. This is how.

Get rid of annoying suggestions

Have you noticed any suggested links that appear when you open the Start menu? Windows displays recommended apps that you think may be useful.

If you’m tired of seeing these suggestions, you can turn them off so they do not rotate on the Start menu anymore:

  • click on Start meny> Settings icon
  • Click Personalization
  • Click Start on the left side of the route
  • Replace the slider of to deactivate “Show suggestions from time to time in Start”

2. Simplify the app list

It is annoying when the app you are looking for is hidden among many others you do not use. You have a few options to banish the clutter.

To hide the app list in the Start menu:

  • Again, navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start
  • From here, change “Show app list in the Start menu” of

If you realize that there are apps you no longer want, you can remove them:

  • Log in to your computer as an administrator
  • Enter apps in the search box
  • Select under the search results Apps and features
  • Select a program you want to remove
  • Press Uninstall
  • Repeat the process for each program you want to remove

Disable options you do not use

By default, the Windows 10 Start menu shows you things that were recently added or your most used apps. Seeing new apps you’ve added in recent weeks may be helpful in the first place, but you may not find the feature particularly useful over time.

To disable the other options in Windows 10:

  • Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start
  • Change the “Show most used apps” function of
  • You can also switch of “View recently added apps” in this section if you do not want all of your newly installed applications to be displayed

4. Organize tiles according to your own wishes

Starter tiles are large, bright boxes that give you quick access to specific apps. Not everyone likes to be greeted by a plethora of square tiles with quick access to the Microsoft Store or calendar when you sign in.

If you prefer to go without the tiles built into Windows 10, you can turn them off. It’s easy to do too. Note: You must be logged in as an administrator to enable or disable the “Show multiple tiles at startup” setting.

  • Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start
  • Replace “Show more tiles on Start” of

To rearrange or rearrange the tiles on Start:

  • Click the Windows button in the lower left corner
  • To move a tile, click and drag it where you want it to go

5. Select which folders to display

By default, three folders fill the Start menu: Documents, Pictures, and Settings.

You can add more folders to the mix along with the default settings. Maybe you want to add File Explorer, downloads, music, videos, networks or even a personal folder.

You have to work within the height restrictions on the Start menu screen, but you can customize which folders are displayed as often as you like.

To add, edit, or remove folders from the Start menu:

  • Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start
  • Click Select which folders to display on Start at the bottom of the menu
  • You will see a list of folder options
  • From here you can exchange them on or of depending on your preferences

Voilà! Your Start menu is just the way you want it.
