HBO Max ‘missed mark’ with update, restores the native tvOS player

The HBO Max app on Apple TV 4K has been updated to return to using Apple’s tvOS API, accompanied by an apology to users.

When HBO Max replaced Apple’s tvOS API with its own video playback system, users reported errors and Screen time described it as “terribly bad.” Now the company has gone back to using Apple’s system, and has also given an apology.

HBO Max is not the only Apple TV app that uses its own playback system instead of relying entirely on Apple. Disney + has also developed a system, and although it is more successful than HBO Max, that is why the app can not yet support rolling out the new Siri Remote.
