[Hands-on] Fortnite for Android, the most frustrating version to play yet

Alright all you Fortnite fans, it's time to take a closer look at the latest Galaxy Apps store release to see what Epic Games has actually delivered for Android. As you all probably know now, Fortnite will not be listed on the Play Store. Instead, APK will be published on Epic's website when Samsung's exclusive agreement is over. Beta access has just opened for non-Samsung users, but for an invite you must register on the Epic's Fortnite beta website first. So if you're eager to get your hands on the game but not yet playing, let me outline exactly what you can expect in this hands-on with the Android version of Fortnite .



] Currently, only those who can play Fortnite Samsung users with an S7, S8, S9, Note 8, Note 9, Tab S3, or Tab S4. To get the game installed, just navigate to the Galaxy Apps store app on your device and click on the giant Fortnite banner at the top. This will start the installation download. Once the installer is fully installed, the actual game begins to download, and when done, you will be able to jump in and shoot some fools.


I'd like to start this by covering the graphics and you will see why in a minute. The first thing to keep in mind is that I'm playing a Galaxy S8 +. This is a year old device, but its specifications are still solid enough to run the highest quality game called Epic. In fact, I can not let my graphics settings go. There are opportunities to do it, but for some reason my people are where they are, and no matter how much I flaunt them, I can not change them. My opinion throughout this event is based on my experience with epic quality and a framerate set at 30fps.

The framerate has yet to hold on to a solid 30fps for me for a long time. I had many stiffer and missed frames through each session and it was never smoothed. Epic's servers may be the most important culprit here, as this is a brand new version, but when my Nintendo Switch and iPad perform exponentially better, I see no need to play on Android just to make up for poor performance.

Oh, and if that awful frame rate was not enough of a problem, expect enough of Jaggies. As far as I can tell, no anti-aliasing happens. Everything has a rough edge, which makes this one of the worst looks out there. You can not even make the face of the character in the main menu.

Just look at all the rough edges.

I would also like to point out that textures are not good. I'm not sure what resolution the game really is playing, but it's not native to GS8 +. The things are blurry and the environmental texts are very low. Both the sharp edges and the low quality textures may be a problem with the resolution I hold, as I would think there would not be so much of a problem if the game was rendered at 2960×1440 instead of what it is currently.

All in all, the biggest disappointment for me with the latest release of Fortnite for Android is the horrendous graphics and general laggy performance. I can not get past these two issues. There is no good reason why the Android version is the worst of the gang when you play solid hardware. I do not know if this has to do with the lack of optimization or an unrealistic schedule for release, but Epic is usually better than this.


The first time you start Fortnite Fortnite you can choose from three separate shooting methods. The first is automatic fire, the other is press anywhere, and the third uses a dedicated button to shoot. You can also change these at any time in the skin setup tool. Why these settings are not under the usual control options, I could not tell you, but let me say they were not fun to track.

If automatic photography is your paper jam, you will probably be excited to hear that the target assistance is also included and it is by default. It's nothing like playing a shooter designed to play for you, am I right? I personally choose to use the dedicated shooting button, even if it puts me in a disadvantage. Touchscreen controls, when shooting manually, work well enough for what they are, but something tactile would be more ideal.

I also tested to see if the HID controller supported over USB OTG and it does not. Epic claims steering support will end, but the company also said the same when iOS users requested control support in March and they still do not have it. For a game that would be perfect on Nvidia Shield TV, it's probably nice that control support is missing.


Playing with the sound when recording definitely does not contribute to long-term survival.

The game works the same as on any other platform, just with much more layers and worse controls. Like any other game's royal game out there, your job is to survive for as long as you can while taking out every player you come across. Well, there are some other modes where you can cooperate with friends, but the main mechanics will be the same, take out all those who are not in your team. Just do not expect to communicate with these group members, as voice chat is not yet supported.

Playing with friends can still be a good thing if you know many people who play, but as a solo experience, I find the game to be pretty humdrum. The fighting lasts for a long time, and much of the game is played around instead of actually participating in some sick shooting.

It can be challenging to switch back and forth from the building's controls to the slider controls on a touchscreen, and since you have to play on the touchscreen, you'll find that your thumbs cover more than a few of your visual signals. If you do not have your volume, it may be very difficult to know that you are shot on your left thumb side partially covering the area that shows that queue. It's almost always a disadvantage for ports implementing the touchscreen controls, and when all hell goes loose in a game, the last thing you need is an incomplete view of what's happening.

At the very least, it is appreciated that we can play now on the go on an Android device so if you're on your phone for free on your free time, the Android version of Fortnite can be a good one fit. I can not say that it is the ideal way to play, but it will put it in focus.


Since this is not a Play Store release, Google Play Games Services are not included. This does not mean you can not log in with a Google Account. You will not find any GPG services. You can also sign in with an Epic, Facebook, PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch account. So if you've previously played on another platform, you can log in with the account you used and all your data will be synced.

You can also expect to find some useful tips in the settings menu. It's a control help option if you're not familiar with touchscreen controls, and it's a link to a behavior code for all those who like to swear with the oldest, but are not sure about what to get away with. You can even send some feedback to devs from this section if you will run over any errors you want to report.

Oh, and let me add that if you play with a modded APK and have sideloaded the game, you may want to use your regular account to log in, since it is still unknown if Epic will take some steps to squash people who should not have access.

Revenue generation

Uh, this is where things get dark. Some of you may be a fan of how this is being recorded, while others will hate it infinity. Fortnit I use a Battle Pass system. It is a subscription to a season that earns extra items when you play. If you're a hardcore player, I can see why this would sound like a good deal, but I honestly do not have to pay a fee every three months for such a low shooter. Alright, this is ultimately your choice and, as we all know, it's a very lucrative system for Epic.

If you're not down with Battle Pass, you can play for free, you just do not want to earn a lot of cool loot. You still have the option to buy cosmetics in the store, but you must first spend your money on an in-game currency called V-Bucks. You can do it through a few different purchases in the app. These IAPs range from $ 4.99 to $ 99.99, and there are often bonuses you can catch that depend on how much you want to spend.

A simple outfit in the store usually costs around 1200 to 1500 V-Bucks. The problem is that you can not buy 1500 V-Bucks. Your closest options are packages of 1000 for $ 9.99 a piece or $ 2500 for $ 24.99. Like all other free games games out there, developers are really excited to buy prices at unbeatable prices that force you to spend more than you want at IAP.

Try not to be confused by the ridiculous conversion

Fortnite for Android is easily the worst version available thanks to poor performance, low quality graphics, and too many automatic touchscreen controls. Of course, this is still a beta release, and improvements will undoubtedly come, but after such a long freaking structure, let's just say I'm very underwhelmed with how it turned out.

It must be tough to hold number one place in the Battle Royal genre, but rushing out a release is not something that will ever sell me on a game. What I would not give to a developer who actually waits until their product is finished before it is released. Why can not we return to that system?
