Halo Infinite’s developers smashed a piano to record sounds for the game



Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries smashed a piano to pieces to record sound effects, the studio revealed in a new blog describing many aspects of the game’s sound production. I really recommend watching the video of piano smashing at the top of this post. That’s pretty satisfying.

But the 343’s sound team did not just use the piano as a target for various blunt instruments. Before smashing it, they placed a subwoofer on the piano to use it as a resonator. And after they destroyed it, they put dry ice on many pieces of the piano’s remains, “which gave a great offer of singing, roaring, screaming and everything in between,”

; said the developers. Some of the resulting noises are cooling of the spine. (Interesting, the sound team for Death Stranding also cluttered with a piano to record a variety of sounds for the game.)

In addition to detailing the destruction of the piano, the blog thoroughly goes into things like how some shooting effects differ between Halo 5 and Infinite halo, the acoustic system that simulates how sound moves through the game’s environments, and how sound design differs between singleplayer and multiplayer. 343 also revealed it Halo Infinite supports Dolby Atmos, Windows Sonic and DTS Headphone: X virtual surround sound technologies, which allow you to hear spatial sound even when you have stereo headphones.
