As part of a new update on the development of Halo Infinite, developer 343 Industries highlighted in particular the contributions to the game’s Audio Team. It’s all worth reading if you’re at all interested in learning more about the upcoming video game and especially the sound, but perhaps the most notable bit is that Halo Infinite includes a franchise-first feature: virtual surround sound. Essentially, it seems that different sounds come from the right direction, depending on the player’s position.
“Halo Infinite will be the first Halo title to support the Virtual Surround Sound technologies Dolby Atmos, Windows Sonic and DTS Headphone: X,” said Chase Thompson, the lead audio designer at Halo Infinite, as part of the larger update. These spatial sound technologies allow us to make sounds feel like they are playing behind or above you, when using only stereo headphones. We have created a custom layout for our sounds in the game so that you get a clear separation between spatial and non-spatial In this way, whether you are playing over headphones or on a surround sound system, you can very clearly tell exactly where your enemies are when you are in battle. “
The Audio Team for Halo Infinite has worked hard and left no stone, or sound waves, inflexible. Dig into our latest issue of Inside Infinite to learn more about the sounds that come with the sights of Zeta Halo.
