Google Shopping expands to India in English and Hindi

Google delivers its successful Shopping product to India, where it will also support Hindi product search.

Why should you bother

Google brings the Shopping tab to Google Search and launches a new separate Shopping homepage in India as it sets its websites to bring more sellers and hundreds of millions of Indian consumers into their ecosystem.

"We hope this will allow all types of retailers, especially those who have never had an online presence, to reach millions of new consumers," says Google Shopping VP Surojit Chatterjee, in a statement. There are about 20 million retail-oriented small According to Chatterjee, of the 400 million Indian consumers online, less than a third buy online, according to Chatterjee.

With the launch, announced Thursday, Google also extends Merchant Center to support Hindi, as well as English . Sellers can upload their product feeds to Merchant Center in Hindi and market their products on Google Shopping to users who search for that language. It is estimated that around 44 percent of the country speaks Hindi.

Google is not the only company competing about the attention of the consumer and seller in India. Google Shopping is coming to India in an e-commerce landscape dominated by two major actors: Walmart-d reseller company and India-native Flipchart, where Chatterjee was previously product leader, and Amazon, who launched a Hindi website in September. Flip chart has taken e-commerce part from Amazon, which is estimated to have 44 percent of the e-commerce market in India against Flipkarts 40 percent.
