Google Pixel 5 replaces JerryRigEverthing’s durability test, reveals thick layer of plastic

Google Pixel 5 has passed JerryRigEverthing’s durability test, and it shows “large amounts of plastic.” Google advertises that the phone has a “water-repellent metal body” and a “100 percent recycled aluminum cabinet”, but nowhere is there a plastic coating or bio-resin on top of the metal. The demolition showed that essentially the entire curvature of the phone is plastic on top of metal. The area of the back panel where the wireless charging coil is located does not have metal between itself and the plastic back.

Zack Nelson, on his YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, put the Pixel 5 through its many durability tests. The phone’s screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and started showing scratches at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, as expected. The more interesting development takes place in the back, where Nelson found “large amounts of plastic.”

; YouTuber also noted that Google’s website mentions metal three different times, but does not even mention plastic or bioharp.

Excavation on the side eventually revealed metal under the plastic layers. The volume buttons are made of plastic, but the on / off button is made of metal. On the back, significant amount of scratches and peeling revealed the copper charging coil. Pixel 5 supports wireless charging, but this technology has a limitation; it does not work through metal. So, to get around this limitation, Google removed all metal from the relevant area on the back, so that the charging coil and the wireless charging surface it comes in contact with have only bio-resin in between.

Nelson also discovered that the battery is located just below the charging coil and is not protected by any metal. Sticking in the back panel caused the battery to be punctured and start smoking, which in turn destroyed the phone.

The bio-resin in particular is much more durable than ordinary plastic and did not dissolve when stored in acetone. By using a significant amount of heat, it became a little soft and easy to pull apart, revealing the metal on the upper and lower part of the phone. However, even with the central part of the phone not reinforced with metal, the Pixel 5 did not bend easily, providing some reassurance to the owners.
