Google is editing Google Fit for Wear OS, Android, and iOS



Raise your hand if you walk 10,000 steps a day or complete 75 minutes of heavy physical activity or 150 minutes of moderate physical activity in the week as recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA).

It's great if you do it – you live a healthy and active life. However, most Americans lack these recommended training goals, giving them greater risk of getting health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or dementia.

Why? The goal is unattainable. To correct this, Google reached AHA to build a renewed Google Fit app and platform that better translates the physical activity guidelines to more achievable goals Americans can incorporate into their daily routines. Basically: You do not need a training membership to live a healthy and active life.

The app has added many features over the years, and while it's great to have so much data on itself, non-users have found it overwhelming.

During a sit-down preview for the new Google Fit app rolling out for Android, Wear OS and iOS users, Google Fits Senior Product Manager Margaret Hollendoner said that drop-off for Fit users was surprisingly high . Most users configure their Fit profiles and gradually over time, giving up their goals.

"When we talked with our users and tried to learn more about what their experience was, we heard that the flexibility of the app that could have worked for some power users was quite overwhelming for these people," said Hollendoner.

While it may be quite obvious what AHA's weekly 75-minute physical activity or 150 minutes of moderate physical activity means, it appears that there is a larger proportion of the American population who have no idea what it really shakes out two.

What is considered moderate activity and what is considered to be powerful? Hollendons and her team were trying to better define them with the new Google Fit app.

] Instead of focusing primarily on steps or minutes of a particular physical activity, the new Google Fit will use two new metrics to measure activity intensity : Move minutes (moderate) and Heart Points (powerful) represented respectively with a blue and green ring.

"We learned from AHA that while steps are a great way to make people move, the intensity of activity is really when you start to see health benefits in terms of the effort you enter, more than the activity you get, says Hollendoner.

The new Google Fit uses two new metrics to measure activity intensity : Move minutes and Heart Points.

With Move Minutes and Heart Points, the new Google Fit user encourages the user to live a less sedentary lifestyle, but also to get their hearts up, which has been scientifically proven to be good for your health.

"Looking at the health benefits of people who meet the 150 minutes of the week, it's a 35 percent reduction in heart disease among those people, "Kapil Parakh, medical director of Google Fit and a practicing cardiologist, explained to me.

Move Minutes are self explanatory: For every minute you move, you get closer to your move Move Minutes. Move Minute is a moderate intensity movement tracked by your Android phone or Wear OS smartwatch. Any heart rate that is 50-69 percent above your maximum expected pulse considered moderate intensity, says Parakh.

Heart Points, on the other hand, measures heavy activity. Users get a heartbeat for each move-minute and two points if you look up the activity if your heart rate is 70 percent or higher than your normal heart rate.

Move minutes and Heart Points is designed to help users stay active throughout the day with minor changes.

For example, if you catch the pace while walking from the train station to the workplace, you can register as a powerful activity if you get high heart rate. Everything like gardening do you work every weekend? It counts as powerful physical activity towards your goals.

The traditional physical workouts still count (Google Fit recognizes up to 120 different physical activities) so if you are in rowing, running or cycling or anything that causes your heart rate to go higher than usual, they will

"You do not have to buy a training membership or suddenly start exercising if you do not do it today," says Hollendoner. "It's the kind of thing we want people to understand – design a metric to help users realize that this is something they can do in their daily routines and that it would have a much greater impact on health than any kind of training alone. "

In many ways, the new Google Fit seems to be physical activities. And honestly there is nothing wrong with that. Anyone who uses Apple Watch for training tracking knows that smartwatch is effective in owning you in "closing the rings" and completing your daily training goals. If a user sees that they have already completed their Move Minute goals but do not have their credit points, they can actually go to action and go faster instead of slow.

"It's a new concept in Google Fit, but it's going to be on the Fit platform too," says Hollendoller. "We reach out to all the partners like Strava – so if I have my activity from Strava shown here we can give people credit for what they do in the Fit app, but we also make Heart Points available on the platform so Strava and other programs can begin to get this concept.

"And hopefully other programs will start using it and there will be more reinforcement for existing recommendations and guidelines. So it's not meant to be exclusive to Google Fit, but this is where users will see it first. "

More achievable training goals
