Google held a hardware event on October 9 to reveal updated versions of Chromecast media streamer and Google Pixel phone, but the company also announced a brand-New Device: Google Hub.
Hub is a $ 149 Google Assistant smart speaker and smart home hub with a screen that will be released October 22th. It is already available for pre-order at Walmart, Best Buy and Target.
Google clearly designs the hub to take on the Amazon Echo Show. It has a 7-inch touchscreen, speakers, microphones and a smart assistant built-in. The screen sits on top of a base that has a linen-like cover similar to that on the Google Home Mini, but it's hidden from the screen to make the hub look smaller.
Two sensors over the screen automatically shine and dim the screen depending on the lighting conditions in the room, making this the only smart hub with a screen that I can recommend for use in your bedroom at night. Although Google has noticed Hub's aesthetics, the biggest feature is the ability to use Google Assistant to display information from search giant services on Hub's display.
Need for directions? Ask Google Maps. watch a video? Ask for it on YouTube. Interested in watching your upcoming deals? If you are a Gmail user, they are just a question away! Want to show some holiday pictures? Take them up with Google Photos.
The Hub also works with third party party apps, including Pandora and Spotify. It can control a wide range of smart home accessories and send video and audio to Chromecast-enabled gadgets. It's smart enough to answer a wide range of questions as well. However, integration with Google's first-party apps is the biggest advantage over the Echo Show.
I recently tried the Lenovo Smart Screen and was blown away by how much better it was than Amazon's first generation show. Google's nav looks even better with its affordable price tag. At $ 1
We'll get a full review available when we take our hands on Google Hub to ourselves, but if you're a big fan of Google's assistant and its world of Chromecast-enabled devices, it's a no-brainer.
