It's hard for anyone to argue for against Google Assistant as the best voice assistant when answering questions. Assistant has proven time after time that it is superior. Recently though, a test found that the gap between assistant, Siri and Alexa is starting to close a bit.
The best gifts for Android users
For the second consecutive year, Loup Ventures has conducted a test with Google Assistant, Siri and Amazon Alexa smart speakers to determine which one is the smartest option. Not surprisingly, Google Assistant took the crown here again. Over 800 questions, Google Assistant understood 100% of what was asked, and responded correctly just shy of 88% of the time.
Apple's Siri, on the other hand, only 74.6% of the questions answered correctly and understood 99.6%. Alexa, finally, understood 99% of the questions asked, and 72.5% of them were answered correctly. In a distant fourth quarter, Microsoft's Cortana understood 99.4% of the questions, but only 63.4% of them answered correctly.
Google Home continued its overprestation, 86% answered correctly and understood all 800 questions. HomePoden answered correctly 75% and just misunderstood 3, Echo answered 73% and misunderstood 8 questions, and Cortana correctly responded 63% and misunderstood only 5 questions.
These numbers should not be all that is surprising and they actually adjust relatively close to what we have seen from other similar tests. In particular, Loup Ventures used an Amazon Echo, Google Home Mini, Apple HomePod and Harmon Kardon Invoke to perform this test. The questions themselves were divided into five categories: Local, Trade, Navigation, Information and Command. Assistant won all of them with one of these categories, with Siri taking the edge only when it comes to commands.
Google Home has the edge in four out of the five categories, but lacks Siri in the command category. HomePods management in this category may be because HomePod will send further SiriKit requests such as those relating to messages, lists and basically anything but music to the iOS device that is connected to the speaker. Siri on iPhone has deep integration with email, calendar, messages and other focus areas in the command category. Our questionnaire also includes a host of music-related queries, which HomePod specializes in.
However, what is particularly interesting in all of this is how these numbers compare with last year. The same test was performed this time last year and everyone has become much better at the time. In 2017, the assistant went through this test with only 81% correct where Alexa was 64%. Siri was not on HomePod at the time, but in February the speaker ran this test with a stupidity of 52%.
Clearly, Google's competitors close the gap between their products and the assistant. In particular, Siri has seen huge growth here and it is absolutely legitimate. Meanwhile, Google Assistant has the edge, and consumers know it as a sales show.
