PlayStation fans who blanched at Sony’s bold black-and-white design for the PlayStation 5 now have a monochrome alternative, thanks to accessory maker Dbrand.
Dbrand now sells replacement discs called Darkplates to customize the color of your PlayStation 5 – and as long as the color you want is matte black, you’re fine. Dbrand’s website currently shows customization options for both Disc Edition and PS5 Digital Edition, although the digital discs are not yet on sale. One set of exterior discs costs $ 49 (no shipping cost) for the disc edition.
Outside the plates are not leather. They are brand new components that allow you to replace the side and center surfaces of the PS5. So you have to install them yourself. Sony made a breakdown of the PS5 back in October, which shows how the components come off.
But demand is high. Dbrand is already sold out from the first few production runs of Darkplates, and the first you can get a set is in May 2021
Dbrand brags about his new product and says on his website: “Go ahead, sue us.” Presumably it is a reference to another company’s attempt to sell black PS5 replacement discs under the name PlateStation 5. The company changed its name, but said Sony had threatened legal action over its aftermarket discs, and eventually canceled all orders.
