2018 Mac mini port array
What are the ports?
A Gigabit Ethernet or 1
Fire Thunderbolt 3 porter! Does it mean I can have four 5K screens?
No. It appears that the four ports are on a controller. Practically speaking, this means that a user can have two monitors with 4096 x 2304 resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt 3, plus a 4096 x 2160 resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0. Alternatively, the user can have a 5120 x 2880 resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt 3 plus a 409 x 2160 resolution at 60Hz connected to the HDMI 2.0 port.
Of course you can always hang an external GPU off of it and have lots of monitors.
Is the RAM user expandable?
Yes. Slots are SO-DIMM slots and are most accessible to the user. In conversations with Apple company employees, we have been told that users with "modicum of skill" can come to par RAM slots.
SO-DIMM slot on left
AppleInsider will not recommend this to all users right now because of the note and the current lack of clarity. But we will investigate what is required to get to the tracks as fast as we can.
If I buy my own RAM, I need?
Apple says the new Mac mini uses 2666MHZ DDR4 SO-DIMM RAM. In particular, it looks like DDR-4 PC4-21300, non-ECC unbuckled RAM. On Crucial.com today, a 16GB set is $ 146, with a 32GB set of $ 292. RAM is a commodity, and pricing may vary greatly from day to day so if you've found this post for a long time after 30 October, prices may be higher or lower.
This is not additive. You must extract the RAM module you purchased with the machine. Keep it handy, though. If you need warranty repair, please re-insert it before Apple will look at it.
Is the internal drive available to the user?
No. It's not a slotted M.2 drive, nor SATA. Buy what you need for internal storage when you get the machine.
Realize that it has four 40Gbit / sec Thunderbolt 3 ports, so consider external storage. A USB 3.1 type C-generation 1 cabinet for a SATA SSD is about $ 20 from Amazon. One that can take two drives and is USB 3.1 Type C generation 2 is about $ 60.
We're talking about possibilities for really ridiculous storage for the new machines before not so long.
Why, though? This seems stupid.
Mac mini storage is PCI-E storage, with Apple claiming that the drive has sequential read speed of up to four times faster than the previous model, with a peak of 3.4 gigabytes per second. 19659008] A SATA drive is limited to approximately 550 megabytes per second, reading about one-sixth of the speed. Standard M.2 drives are faster than that of course, but not up to 3.4 gigabytes per second.
Use cases vary, of course. What works for a user very well is overkill for another. Talking about overkill …
LOL, $ 4200 is too much for a Mac mini!
Yes, the highest configuration for a Mac mini is $ 4200. A large part of it is expensive SSD.
If you are the type of AppleInsider reader who needs "a $ 4200 Mac mini, then you're the kind of user who buys his own RAM and will get an external cabinet and pack it full of own stations.
Is the processor upgradeable?
No. We have been told that the processors are all soldered and not socketed. Get the fastest you can afford.
… this also seems stupid.
For A small segment of Apple users. It's not optimal, but it's not stupid. Apple's choice in how design machines – including processor mounting – have dramatically been reduced to service levels in just a few years. But, as we said before, more about this later.
As a reminder, just because there have been machines like can take a CPU upgrade of the truly adventurous, like 5.1 Mac Pro and reaching the iMac Pro, it does not matter A good idea for everyone. Apple has only very rare explicit permission for the CPU task erasures, and even then it was for many days.
Can I use USB-C iPad Pro as Remote Monitor for Mac mini?
This is more about iPro than Mac mini, but let's address it anyway.
You can not connect a USB-C to USB-C cable without any other software to do it now, no. USB-C to DisplayPort or HDMI is a special "Alternative Mode" negotiation, and it will require additional software to a minimum and hardware that is more likely in iPad Pro to allow this.
There are always software options like Duet Display, which largely benefit from a high-speed wired connection that USB-C will provide, or wireless solutions like AstroPad's Luna Display, though to do this.
The stack of Mac mini looks cute, how does it work?
First of all, nothing new is there. There are no fancy connections or special contacts that Apple used or released on Tuesday.
At the New York event, Apple had a stack of Mac minis, turning to a problem easily broken into pieces – called embarrasing in parallel – with compatible software. Not all tasks can be broken like this, and neither will it stack five Mac mini gives you an inherent advantage on daily tasks.
But what about …
We still have many questions about the new machine. When we collect questions and collect answers, we update it accordingly.
