In addition to today’s IGN FIRST feature, where Monster Hunter Rise Director Yasunori Ichinose explains how the Nintendo Switch listing will make the series even more accessible to new players, we have a surprise for you! We are proud to exclusively reveal some of the concept art for Rises Somnacanth and Aknosom weapons and armor. Check them out in the gallery below!
Monster Hunter Rise Concept Art: Somnacanth and Aknosom Armor, Weapons
It’s an obvious Japan – inspired setting for the Kamura Village home base and mission maps, while many of the new monsters are inspired by the Yokai, or ghosts and spirits from Japanese folklore. However, Ichinose tells us that the game’s equipment design has also been inspired by a wide range of cultures outside of Japan.
Take, for example, Aknosom armor and helmet, whose designs were obviously taken from Western knights. However, Ichinose tells us that the people of Kamura Village have also implemented their own culture in this armor. Take a closer look, and you may notice that the material in the armor is structured like folded origami paper, mixing western design with Japanese traditional fabrics.
Somnacanth armor was inspired by fortune tellers and assassins in the Middle East. The hood creates a mysterious atmosphere, and Ichinose explains that the glowing blue parts are a central feature of Somnacanth’s design.
Ichinose also tells us that while weapons returning from the world will follow the designs of that game, all of them are based on new monster materials designed individually so that they stand out more than before.
