When Final Fantasy XIV introduced only Viera and only Hrothgar as playable races for his Shadow feeders expansion, the fans were not happy. It turns out that the game’s graphics team was not happy either, so they worked in their spare time between the patches to get male rabbits and female cats to Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker.
In a Questions and answers posted this morning on PlayStation Blog, FFXIV producer Naoki Yoshida talks about how the surprising addition of male Viera unveiled during the recent Fanfest streaming event came about. During Shadowbringersrelease, Yoshida was determined that gender-locked versions of Viera and Hrothgar would be the last playable races added to the game. As the game director points out, each new game gives more runs to each game update. Clothes must fit. Cutscenes must be tested to ensure that members of the new races stay in the frame. The emots must also be tailored for each race, so it becomes more complicated to add a new gesture or dance.
So we settled with female rabbits, and honored Fran from Final Fantasy XIIand males in honor of Kimahri from Final Fantasy X. But it was not good enough for the fans, and to leave such a strong player unanswered query did not fit well with the game’s graphics team. So they spent their own time figuring it out.
“They spent over half a year using the free time they had between their normal work on the notes to consider ways to add a new playable race,” Naoki Yoshida tells PlayStation Blog. “From this, they concluded that we could probably push in just one more at this point.”
So not only did the graphics team enable male Viera, they also figured out how to add female Hrothgar. “Instead of waiting for (hypothetically) 7.0 to add two playable races at the same time,” says Yoshida, “we realized that we could actually ease the impact on our resources if we implemented these at a time. In the end, I decided that we should go ahead and implement one playable race at a time, and I will make sure to explain that to our players: that is what we did for this upcoming expansion. ”
So here it is Final Fantasy XIVtheir graphics team, who worked tirelessly to get skinny rabbit boys for the next expansion. They are the real heroes.
