Facebook Portal vs. Google Home Hub vs. Amazon Echo Show

It has been a busy couple of weeks for smart monitors, an emerging category of voice-enabled touch screens that search somewhere in the living room or kitchen. First, Amazon introduced us to its new and improved, Second Generic Echo Show . Then, with the surprise campaign of Facebook, Facebook came with a few "Portal" smart monitors with cameras that can automatically track you while moving on video calls. The very next day: Google rolled out the smart home-centric Google Home Hub .

There are three, counting them, three titans of technology that fight to get you into their smart shows this holiday season (not to mention those from Lenovo and JBL which has already been released earlier this year, or from Sony and LG which does not yet come.

So how do these new images stack up against each other? Let's start the best way I know how: With a large, unlimited interface full of specifications:

What breaks them down

] There is no clearly defined recipe for success in the smart display category yet – we have not had a Nest or Echo Dot ] type breakout that is really linked to the masses. This means that the companies that make these smart monitors are still trying to figure out how to sell people in this category – and none of them take the same approach.

The Facebook screenshots will automatically follow you around the room during video calls.

For camera or not for camera?

The most obvious differential is the way these cameras are displayed. Amazon and Facebook include both cameras in front of the camera for voice-enabled video chat, and the Cameras in the Facebook portal show the use of AI to automatically follow you during conversations so you do not move around the room without worrying about framing.

Meanwhile, Google has not put a camera in its smart screen at all, CNET says, "It's a comfort thing … We wanted to make sure you could use this anywhere in the home."

Time will tell which approach connects the best with consumers, but it is also worth noting that Facebook Portal also displays physical privacy codes that cover the cameras when you are not using them. There is no physical shutter on the Amazon Echo Show, even if you can "mute" the camera with the microphone by pressing a button on the top of the device.

Various designs

The Echo Show hides most of its speaker in the back, giving it the appearance of a floating flat screen for your worktop.

Tyler Lizenby / CNET

We see an interesting range of designs in the smart screen category, but many seem to be trending against 10-inch flat panel monitors that hide the majority of the speaker on the back. That's what you get with Echo Show and the smaller 10-inch version of the Facebook portal (not to mention Lenovo Smart Display Lenovo Smart Display

). </p>
<p> The 15.6-inch Portal Plus gets much more distinctive, with an iMac-enhanced raised monitor approach that rotates 90 degrees between portrait and landscape mode. For my money, I think it's the finest smart screen design to date, especially in combination with the nifty camera follow-up feature – but after <span class= the mass account is a violation of and scandals involving blatant abuse of the user's personal data Will people really trust Facebook enough to bring this product's camera and microphones into their homes?

Then it's Google. Aside from the bold omission of a camera at all, the Home Hub stands out for a pint-size design that is not even 5 inches high. I want to be very curious about how people respond to smaller designs and displays. The size feels right for a bed, but I think I want something bigger in the kitchen or living room.

Smart Home Front and Center (or not)

You'll find many device-specific smart home controls on monitors like the Google Home Hub.

James Martin / CNET

Amazon and Google are each with the effort to use these smart screens to control your various smart home gadgetry. Both the Echo Show and Home Hub include dedicated, smart home controls on the display to turn on and off, adjust the thermostat and more. The echo show even includes a Zigbee radio that lets it pair directly with things like smart locks and Philips Hue Smart Bulbs no extra hub is needed. At Google's end, the Home Button automatically connects with Bluetooth smart bulbs from GE .

With Facebook, the focus is almost pure on these video calls. The portal offers access to Alexa, but it does not appear that you get the same user interface as the Echo Show. From the sound of it, the on-screen controls for things like smart home gadgets and guided recipe assistance will be more limited than what you get with an Amazon device, but we will let you know when we've had a chance to test the portal controls for ourselves.

Another smart home item: Both the Echo show and the home button let you watch the feed from a compatible smart home camera (you get many alternatives with both platforms, though Amazon is still for Google here). It is currently unclear whether the Alexa-supported cameras will work with Facebook Portal monitors, nor as surveillance of camera entries seemed to be part of the first pitch. I have reached Facebook to get ready and will update this place if I get an answer.

We know much more about these screens as soon as we've had the opportunity to test them all out (from now on, we've just got our hands on the new second generation Echo Show ). Stay up to date with all reviews in the coming weeks.
