In a power outage that has affected many in the last 30 minutes, major products from Facebook including Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and the giant social network have gone down.
Thousands of users have approached DownDetector this evening to report power outages with Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. All products appear to have gone down around 5.30pm EDT, but possibly earlier for some.
The breach appears to affect all devices, including web and mobile apps. Some direct links seem to work in our short testing, but navigating directly to the website breaks on Facebook. At the moment, Facebook does not report any issues on the dashboard and has not yet publicly acknowledged the issue on alternative platforms such as Twitter. At the time of publication, nearly 1
Within an hour, the outbreak seemed to be resolved for the most part, with user reports of a downward trend around 18:15 EDT.
In particular, this is not the first major outage from Facebook in recent memory. March 19 brought a “technical problem” down the same Facebook products for several hours. Especially during this interruption, the number of users who reported problems on DownDetector was actually far fewer than those who have already reported problems in just the 30 minutes the interruption has occurred today.
The cause of tonight’s power outage is unclear, but we expect that Facebook will comment on the situation relatively soon to provide some insight into what is happening and when things can be resolved.
