Update: Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp seem to be working again, but this is the second time the popular social media and messenger services were down in a month.
Did not get access to your Facebook feed today? Instagram photos not loaded? Whatsapp messages would not go through? You were not alone. All Facebook-owned apps were down for potentially billions of users today. We experienced a power outage for about 20 minutes, according to our tests and other people’s complaints – mostly via Twitter.
⚠️ Anyone else? Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are down for me. I keep tweeting about recovery from here while Twitter stays up. But I plan to keep asking questions and answers on Instagram Stories tonight (so many questions). https://t.co/GPPm6DUZStA April 8, 2021
“We’re sorry, but something went wrong. Please try again,” the Instagram app said each time we tried to access some part of the app. We can now update our feed with photos and videos, and we were unable to send messages.
WhatsApp was similar, with a ‘Connecting’ and circular icon near the top, and we saw the same kind of problems in the Facebook Messenger app. The messages did not reach our contacts in about half an hour. Eventually WhatsApp messages went through, but the app still has trouble connecting.
Facebook has not yet commented on the problems, but there have been similar problems in the past that have seen all these services suffer from power at the same time.
TechRadar has asked Facebook for a comment on what is happening, but we have not yet heard back. However, without Facebook commenting officially, we have not received confirmation as to why the services went down or how many of its billions of users were affected.
We continue to monitor the four Facebook-owned services – which no longer appear to be down – if your messages stop working again.
