Fortnite creator Epic Games has filed an official complaint with the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) as a way to express solidarity in the antitrust regulator̵
The North Carolina video game company, founded by Mark Rein, is already stuck in legal action regarding commissions charged by the Apple App Store. When Epic’s Fortnite tried to surpass these commissions by introducing its own payment method in the app, Apple banished the popular gaming app from its store.
The CMA launched an investigation into the App Store after several complaints accused Apple of unfair app developer terms. The iPhone maker’s App Store has been at the center of many complaints about commission or fee structures, according to Reuters.
Tim Sweeney, CEO and co-founder of Epic Games, has previously spoken out about his negative view of Apple’s policies. He called Apple’s App Store practices one of the reasons why costs are so high for consumers. He further said that Apple’s policies could “stifle innovation among developers.”
Epic Games is in the middle of several ongoing lawsuits against Apple in the US and Australia, in addition to an antitrust complaint filed in the EU.
“It’s not surprising that Epic is pushing their agenda ahead of the UK Competition and Markets Authority, as we’ve seen them use the same playbook worldwide,” an Apple spokesman told Reuters.
The legal battles between Epic Games and Apple led several technology companies to join the battle, with some supporting the gaming company and others agreeing with the iPhone maker’s point of view. From the end of last month, Epic was still drumming on the support of technology companies and seeking testimony from parents to the online dating app Tinder.
Epic Games posted one antitrust complaint in the EU against Apple in February, accusing Silicon Valley’s major technology company of deliberately engaging in unfair practices in an attempt to get rid of competitors. It further accused Apple of violating EU competition law by manipulating the ecosystem of the operating system it controls to recover.
