Has ever replaced the battery in a Chrysler sky car, or perhaps an old Sebring or PT Cruiser? You will be reminded of it when the time comes to change your new generation Ford Ranger oil, provided you are a proud member of the DIY public.
Job One for those who want to freshen Ranger's internal lubricant, besides the store's headline for a pair of synthetic and filter jugs, is breaking out the jacket. You must remove a wheel.
Because the 2.3-liter Ecoboost four-cylinder found in the 2019 Ranger is not exactly the same animal as that found in other Ford vehicles, it migrates to a slightly new location. A larger oil cooler means that the filter no longer hangs against the oil pan near the back of the engine. Instead, the filter protrudes on the left side, right angles to the engine's cylinders, making it less accessible to fumbling hands.
Sliding under it and going to the city is just not in the cards, at least for the oil-filtered phase of the operation.

A service procedure obtained by TTAC says that a technician or owner must be dismantled after removing the left front wheel and removing a nine-pin access panel. From there, you remove the filter with a stop cover tool. In order to actually empty the oil, which will, of course, achieve before you attack that filter, you must first unbolt the steering control module underbody shield. Four bolts hold it.
In all, there are quite a few steps to take before filling in 6.2 quartz 5W-30.
Adapting the 2.3L for the Ranger Duty gave a layout that probably won't annoy those who can't care about changing their own oil – which, let's face it, represents the vast majority of vehicle owners. They will only be happy to have 270 hp and 310 lb-ft to push their rigs around. Maybe they will stop boasting to their friends about the 26 mpg highway rating too. Ford would love it if they did.
For others, or perhaps the car's second or third owner, this oil protection process sets the Ranger apart from domestic and foreign rivals, and neither of them requires the removal of wheels. In the worst case, there will be a sliding plate or shield to get out of the way. The V6 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins make up for their dark interior with an oil filter available from under the hood. Less time spent on cold pavement backs is a good thing, but there are compromises for everything.
