Mild spoilers for one Cyberpunk 2077 sequel – continue at your own risk!As pointed out on Nintendo Smash, the endgame mission All Along the Watchtower (check out our Cyberpunk 2077 guide on how to get there) begins with V waking up on the Badlands pond and watching a bird perch in the open car window.
That bird looks and sounds like a barn swallow – in the Witcher world, ‘Swallow’ is the Elvish-English translation of ‘Zireael’, from which Ciri’s name comes (and is the name of the silver sword that Geralt gave her. In The Witcher 3) .
It may seem like a coincidence, but Cyberpunk 2077 makes it very clear that there are no birds in or around Night City. A clip (the name of the game for text logs) entitled “Avian Extermination Act” makes it clear why:
“In the face of increasingly frequent and fatal outbreaks of zoonotic diseases, the city council has decided that the most effective method of reducing the risk of infection among residents is to eradicate all bird life within 18 miles of the city limits.”
This makes the appearance of a live bird in the game particularly remarkable, and one with such a close connection to Ciri feels like a conscious choice for some fans. There is no sign from CD Projekt Red if that is actually the case – there is a lot of fantasy at this time.
As for why players have especially looked for Ciri in Night City – it comes to a set of lines she speaks in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Describing a world she hid in to escape the titular Hunt, Ciri said: “People there had metal in their heads, waged war from a distance, and used things like megascopes. And there were no horses, everyone had their own airships in instead. “
Many have understood that she arrived in Night City. Cyberpunk 2077 director Adam Badowski previously said he was opposed to the idea of crossing the globe, despite the fact that many in the team hope to include Ciri in the game – it may well be that this reference was the compromise.
Although it is a total coincidence, Ciri makes a new appearance in the game – albeit in the form of the cover star of a retro game magazine found in Cyberpunk’s prologue for Corpo players. Many have wondered if Ciri will be the leader in the Witcher game due to begin development after the Cyberpunk release. However, it may take a while before we find out, as Cyberpunk itself obviously has a long way to go.
Following the poor state of the consoles at launch, CD Projekt has committed to a series of updates to fix the game by February, after which it will receive free DLC and paid expansions and finally a multiplayer mode. Considering that you can not even buy the game digitally on PlayStation right now, it will probably be a long way before we get another chance to see the CD project’s Ciri in person again.
