Usually April 1st is a day for jokes and pranks, but this year it also marks a burial of various kinds: Cortana death on mobile devices.
Following Microsoft’s decision to close Cortana on smart speakers, including Harman Cardon invoke Earlier this year, Microsoft now pulls support for the Cortana app on Android and iOS devices.
From yesterday 31 March at Microsoft no longer supports the Cortana app, which means that things like reminders and lists in the Cortana app will no longer work, even though Microsoft said These features are still available with Cortana on a Windows PC. For someone who relied heavily on Cortana to keep track of lists and tasks, these items are also automatically syncedissued with Microsoft’s to do app, so you will still have a way to manage them on a mobile device.
While Microsoft pulls support for Cortana across a number of devices, not killing the company Cortana completely. Instead, Microsoft works to be in transition away from it use as one general digital assistant and make Cortana a more focused productivity tool, although we have not yet seen what it really looks like.
In Microsoft it will remove support for the current version of Cortana on the original Surface headphones later this year and replace the one with a new version of Cortana available through Outlook, so you can still use voice commands to ask Cortana to check your calendar or your emails using the Play My Emails feature. This new productivityfocused version of Cortana will be available on first generation Surface headphones, along with second generation Surface Headphones and Surface Earbuds.
Unfortunately, for an AI assistant who was once thought of as a rival to Siri and Google Assistant with dreams of running speakers, smart screens and other devices, it seems that Cortana just could not compete with Apple or Google’s assistants. and now turns to a new life as an assistant designed to better support Microsoft’s offerings and businesses. Maybe it’s a campaign. Personally, I just hope Cortana does not eventually become Clippy’s return.
