Comparing the newly developed 11-inch iPad Pro versus 2017s 10.5-inch model

One week after it was revealed at a special event in New York City, Apple's warmly-expected iPad Pro range is available around the world. We pit 11-inch all-screen tablet versus last year's 10.5-inch model, compared to design, performance and tools.

Design

The new iPad Pro feels incredibly thin in your hands. Compared with last year's 10.5-inch iPad Pro, the size and weight difference is immediately apparent, with the 2018 model edging off the edges, giving a slim but solid feel.

The Space Gray model looks brilliant with a dark contrasting antenna line at the top and the repositioned Smart Connector near the bottom. Interestingly, the three-touch communication interface is no longer color matched to iPad Pro body and instead sports a polished silver shine.

iPad Pro Camera Support Compared.

To the Smart Connector on the iPad's backside, the infamous camera is steady. It stands out a bit more than the device on the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and it's also much wider too, but we feel that the add-on adds Apple's industrial design. It should be noted that Apple borrows the camera from its new iPhone XS, removes optical image stabilization and adds a few minor changes to make it work for iPad users.

On the page is a dark plastic piece that serves as a window for Apple Pencils inductive charging components. This year, Pencil breaks the iPad through a series of magnets and is charged wirelessly, a step up from the cumbersome – and potentially dangerous – Lyn contact solution introduced with the first-generation pointer.

Also on the side, new volume buttons feel more flush with the iPad's chassis compared to pushers on last year's iPad Pro. As usual, they feel cozy and tactile. The power button works in the same way, but on the outside it feels different because the sides are now flat, not tapered as before.

We also have four speakers, two on top and two at the bottom of the iPad Pro, and there are now 13 speakers holes in each grill instead of 11 on the 10.5-inch model. Two microphones are located on top of the device and the new USB-C connector is on the bottom. The headphone jack is now gone, but Apple sells a $ 9 USB-C for headphone jack online.

About the subject of contacts, Apple now includes a new 18W USB-C power adapter in the box, which is better than the old 12W adapter that came with previous iPads.

Now you'll see the screens, the new edge of the 11-inch iPad Pro is clearly the star of the show. With no home button and an integrated front-facing camera, Apple was able to significantly narrow down the edges.

Interestingly, the 11-inch model's chassis is actually slightly wider compared to its predecessor, as the 10.5-inch iPad Pro has thinner bones on the sides.

Benchmark Comparison

We drove Geekbench 4's CPU benchmark on both iPad Pros to see how much more performance the new model's A12X Bionic chip offers over the A10X Fusion SoC.

2017 10.5-inch iPad Pro scored 3.985 in single-core and 9,564 in multi-core, decent numbers for a mobile processor, but nothing compared to 5,017 single-core and 17,784 multi-core scores achieved by the new iPad Pro.

Testing Geekbench 4s graphics test, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro scored 29,934 points compared to the new iPad Pro's 42,219 points. It's not quite the doubling of performance that Apple claimed in its main speech, but it comes close with a 41 percent improvement.

Comparison of Monitors

Maximize the brightness of both iPad 2017 and 2018 iPad Pros, we navigated to Amazon's website. With True Tone on, we noticed that the new iPad Pro screen is actually getting a little warmer. We turned off the function and experienced the same results. The new iPad Pro screen is warmer than the old iPad Pro.

  iPad Pro Display

iPad Pro with True Tone enabled.

Like the iPhone XR screen, we noticed that the new iPad Pro screen becomes weaker when we look at it from an angle, more than the older 10.5-inch iPad Pro. Not only that, but the new iPad Pro screen was generally brighter. We also noticed that the corners of the new screen were darker than the center of the screen, probably due to pixel masking and other engineering effects used on the curved corners.

Speaker Comparison

The new 11-inch iPad Pro speakers are as high as before, and we did not perceive any improvements in reliability. However, we discovered a significant improvement in bass rendering. The new iPad Pro has puncher and deeper bass than its predecessor.

Apple Pencil

Like the new iPad Pro, the new Apple Pencil feels fine in hand. Instead of using a smooth chassis, Apple was wearing a matte finish that's not so smooth. One side of the pencil is flat, both for ergonomics and magnetic connectivity for iPad Pro.

  Apple Pencil

New Apple Pencil Design.

Comparing it with the original Apple Pencil, the new version is actually a bit shorter and it also seems to be easier.

Magnets that connect Apple pen to iPad Pro are very powerful. Encodered magnets attract each other and deny others to force the pencil to properly adjust for loading, even if you try to carefully outweigh its location.

At first touch, iPad Pro asks to tie Apple pencil, which is achieved with a single crane. A popup allows users to explore the new double-push feature that allows you to swap between app tools quickly. For example, a double crane in the Notes app switches between pencil and eraser input. Apple developed the configurable control program so that third-party apps can implement their own unique pencil settings.

New Smart Keyboard Folio

The location of iPad Pro is the new Smart Keyboard Folio, a breeze thanks to iPads internal magnet array. The bond is very strong.

  iPad Pro

Smart Keyboard Folio.

We love the design because there's nothing around the edge that needs to lock physically. on iPad Pro to hold it in, so three of the four sides will be exposed. With this year's Smart Keyboard Folio, the back of iPad Pro is covered and protected, and it feels honest, still very slim. The camera's bumper is completely covered and protected as well.

With Smart Keyboard Folio on, users can still attach an Apple pen for charging and carrying. Opening up the smart keyboard has two different writing angles, one is near vertical and another that adds a little more to laptop work. The keys are almost identical to the older design, and are still small and difficult to write compared to a MacBook keyboard.
