The Telegram messaging app marked a sudden increase in downloads after major competitor WhatsApp announced it would let Facebook Inc and its subsidiaries collect user data, including phone number and location.
Telegram picked up nearly 2.2 million downloads, according to data analytics company Sensor Tower, and 100,000 users installed a similar Signal app.
