The first Bluetooth tracker that can work with Apple’s huge Find My Bluetooth network of iPhones, iPads and Macs is here. But it’s not Apple’s long-awaited AirTags tracker; it’s the Chipolo One Spot, an updated version of the company’s One tracker designed to work exclusively with Apple’s network.
Chipolo calls One Spot a “special edition” product. While it has the same 12 month battery life (with replaceable battery), 120dB ring, water resistance and general design like the regular One tracker, One Spot only works with Apple̵
It’s potentially an upgrade for anyone already using Apple products, given that a Bluetooth tracking brand is only as effective as the number of users on the same network. And while Chipolo has been around for a while, it’s still far smaller compared to more established players like Tile or hundreds of millions of Apple devices worldwide.
The One Spot also has some Find My-specific features, such as a “Lost Mode” that lets users mark a missing item – which in turn will alert other Find My users if it is found with a short message and a phone number to help you get your things back.
It’s a kind of confusing product, given the context of Apple’s rumored AirTags tracker that will potentially be released later in 2021, and it will similarly be a Find My exclusive Bluetooth code to keep track of lost or missing items. . Chipolo’s tracker lacks the notorious Ultra-WideBand radio support that Apple’s tag will feature for more precise tracking, but it’s hard to imagine what else Apple’s tag will bring to the table that is not already available on One Spot.
Pre-orders for Chipolo One Spot start in May, and shipping is scheduled for early June. No price has been announced yet.
