A line in Outriders that appears to refer to the January 6 uprising in Washington DC is “purely coincidental,” according to publisher Square Enix.
Outriders has a sci-fi story where the Earth has been abandoned for a new home, but different characters are old enough to remember their previous planet. In a dialogue exchange that recalls old times and exchanges war stories, your player character shows to save your partner from a “redneck mob storming DC.”
For a moment, this looks like it could have been a reference to the January 6 storm in the US Capitol building, where supporters of former President Donald Trump tried to overthrow the election result in 2020. However, Square Enix says this is not the case.
“We wrote and recorded the script for Outriders a couple of years ago, and all aspects of it are completely fictional and related to the background story of the game,”
Basing such a line on real-world events would have been difficult in any case, given that games require such long development times. The dialog bar was already present in the game’s demo, which was released on February 25. It was less than two months after the uprising, so creating, recording and implementing the dialogue shortly afterwards would have been extremely quick.
Outriders have a good start judging by the server’s popularity, but periodic server problems have also been a source of frustration for players. For more information on the game, check out tips you should know before starting Outriders.
