Mazda Canada has just announced prices and details for the different versions of the new 2019 Mazda MX-5 and MX-5 RF, which will be available from dealers in September. The main changes? Increased power, more standard equipment … and a lower starting price. We have had the opportunity to take a first drive in the model – check it here!
In 2019, the MX-5 will receive 17% more power from the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 engine, mainly due to reduction in friction and internal weight, according to Mazda. The drive will now deliver 181 hp and 151 lb-ft with torque (at 4000 rpm), respectively 26 and 3 more than last year.
The engine can be delivered to a 6-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission or 6-speed automatic with manual mode and drive mode selector, at no additional cost. Those who choose the latter transmission can paddle shifters on the wheel.

GS, New Base Model
] GX is no longer the base model of MX-5; Mazda now offers GS as the entry model. It comes with the aforementioned 2.0L engine, but also security upgrades thanks to standard Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), High Beam Control System (HBC) and wide-angle rear camera.
Other new standard features include telescope, seven-inch touchscreen with Mazda Connect infotainment system and HMI Commander, HD radio and navigation-ready functionality (requires SD card accessories). Standard equipment transferred from the 2018 MX-5 GX includes pushbutton starter, air conditioning, advanced key entry system, LED front lights and tail lights, front fog lights, auto leveling lights, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring (ABSM)
] This is the new mid range range of MX-5. It comes with standard sports suspension with bilestone shock absorbers, limited slip differential, bar tower beam and 17-inch black metal rims. A Bose Premium audio system is now standard and has 9 speakers with audio-pilot 2-way compensation technology, along with navigation, leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift handle and parking brake control, heated exterior mirrors and LED daylight lamp (DRL). The interior has black cloth with red stitches and three-position heaters.
The GS-P model can also be reinforced with an available Sport package, including black 17 "BBS forged wheels, Brembo front brakes, red painted front and rear brake caliper and Recaro sports seats (Nappa leather and Alcantara trimmed).
This is again the best dog offer of MX-5 variants available for 2019. Take everything GS-P has and add in automatic air conditioner, automatic dimming rearview mirror, HomeLink wireless control system, 4.6-inch multifunction color display in gauge clusters, SiriusXM satellite radio, black leather seats with KODO nails, convertible top cloth liner, traffic sign recognition system and adaptive front-lighting system.
Buyers can also add options like Dark Cherry cloth soft-folding convertible top, a new brown soft-top option and Chroma Brown Nappa leather seats with KODO stitch Ching.
Mazda takes back the two 2018 trims of the RF model for 2019, and they will get the GS-P designation. Same standard and optional features are present as on MX-5 with soft top. However, the MX-5 RF comes with a 4.6-inch multifunction color display.
