Bokeh Game Studio, the new studio founded by Silent Hill, SIREN, and Gravity Rush creator Keiichiro Toyama, has released a nine-minute “Focus”

; video introducing the CEO and creative director, as well as teasing the studio’s first game.

“When it comes to our first game, I have several directions for my work,” Toyama said in the video. “The one I took is pretty dark, far from my newer titles. It is as if I am returning to my roots, for example against fear. My ideas started going that direction. This is where I take my first title. However, instead of something deeply rooted in horror, I want to keep an entertainment note. While keeping the element from fright, I want the player to feel excited when playing the game. ”

Toyama continued: “The view I have of fear is everyday life that is shaken. Instead of showing scary things, it should question our position, make us challenge the fact that we live peacefully. I like to include this kind of thought in my concepts. I want that to be the theme for my next game.

I often read comics as a form of entertainment, recently you see a trend for content of the type “death games”. These works tend to provide entertainment for somewhat brutal worlds. I like these works and read them often. I naturally took that approach. You have these ordinary people run into irrational situations. They are emotionally on edge while working on action or drama. This affected me and I think it will appear in my next game. ”

“A feature of my games is the attitude, what town or village we develop in, how did these people get there, what is their emotional state. This is how I approach games. I have been inspired by places this time too and started with that. I wander through maps and try different methods to build the setting.

“A trigger was a trip I took in my private time. My family and I went to visit this city in Asia. It had this dynamic like the Asian cities, and kept an exotic feel mixed with a sense of modernity. I began to imagine a setting that held that sense of evolution and energy of the people. I thought it was a good theme to include in my game. ”

Additional concept art is shown throughout the video. Here are a few more:

“I have always enjoyed playing as a player. I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Surprisingly, I had never thought of making it my job.

“I started art school, that’s just when 3D games started coming out. The gaming industry was looking more and more for young people. At that time, I realized that I could imagine becoming a creator. It surprised me, but this came quite naturally. ”

Keiichiro Toyama is the creator behind it Silent Hill, SIREN, and Gravity Rush. In 2020, he left Sony Interactive Entertainment after more than 20 years to found a new studio, where he took the position of creative director.

“I founded Bokeh Game Studio to continue making games in my own style. Games have become bigger and bigger in recent years. The audience has become wider, especially for companies like Sony, where I was. However, instead of reaching the widest possible audience, my games choose the audience in a way. They tend to have these weird concepts, in the end I’m confident they’re making a mark.

“I want to create IPs that fans can enjoy ten, twenty years after they are released. Since I want to continue to achieve this under the right conditions, I thought it was a necessity to have my own studio. ”

The first of Bokeh

Engraving of emotions

“One motivation I have behind taking pictures is to find a way to record the feelings I feel. Back in school, I focused more on analog videography. I wanted to shoot bits of our everyday lives. Pictures have the temporal aspect, so you can go back to a moment in time. I like the nostalgia you get from them. I make sure to engrave these moments, it calms me down in a way. This is why I always have a camera on me.

“Making games is a group activity, we make them together in a studio. I really like it. On the contrary, when I want to express a feeling I have inside me, I want to create new works as part of my daily life, but it can be quite difficult. Photography is the only way I can easily express my own interpretation of the world. You feel how times change too. I realize how different I saw the world a few years ago. It appears especially in the colors. It’s a way for me to face the world alone in a way. Photography fits well with game creation or other group activities, such as my own axis. ”
