[BlizzCon 2021] Diablo 4 devs explain why PVP does not have to be fair

Source: Blizzard Entertainment

While Diablo 4 may not be released in 2021, we still learned more about the game at BlizzCon 2021.

The Diablo 4 developers hosted a press conference on Friday. Among other things, they revealed extensive details about how the Diablo 4 player-versus-player (PVP) system will work. The new system emphasizes organic combat experiences over a sense of pure justice, a point that the developers made very clear at the press conference.

How Diablo 4’s PVP in the open world will work

All of Diablo’s open world PVP capabilities exist within the field of hatred. Hate fields are areas of the upper world that are cursed by Lillith. In these areas you can kill enemies and open coffins that will escape unclean hatred. You can clean the hate offenses at cleanup areas that are also within the hate fields.

“Diablo 4 is our first diablo game in the open world, and we’re trying to really embrace what that means,” explained Diablo 4 system designer Joe Piepiora. “For PVP and Sanctuary, we have these areas called hate fields, which are PVP areas in the open world. But they are filled with monsters, events, coffins to be found, rare elites to kill, and all the usual catches you expect to find in the whole world of Diablo 4. ”

When in the field of hatred, players can choose to mark themselves as hostile. When you are hostile, you can attack other players, but you will also be marked as dangerous to all the players you come across. There is no way for players to force other players to become hostile by mistake, so becoming hostile will always be a decision that players make.

“If I become hostile when I walk around the fields of hatred, everyone else will completely see me as an enemy,” Piopiora said. “They can all come together and attack me. I’m taking a risk, it’s the kind of high reward with high reward that we’re looking for as part of overworld PVP. ”

Use your hate tags in Diablo 4

Once cleared, you can use hat pieces to purchase special PVP items from in-game vendors. Although the items will not improve player statistics in any way, they will serve as a form of bragging rights and prestige. To maintain their importance, the articles can also not be traded, so if someone has a PVP-specific item, they earned it.

However, cleaning the cuttings is not an easy task, as many players will hunt for targets to kill.

“While you are [purifying your shards of hatred] other players can get over you and create that anxiety when you are in the PVP world, where you do not know if another player will help you or hurt you, “said Piopiora. “You can easily work with the players you meet on the hate fields, or they can become hostile and come and attack you. If they are able to kill you, all the unclean hints of hatred that you carried will be dropped, and they will be able to take them from you and move on in their happy path.

A PVP system not designed for justice

The developers were happy to share that this PVP system is not designed for fairness. Instead, the goal of the Diablo overworld PVP system is to introduce a sense of risk and an extra layer of challenge to the game for players who want it.

“One of the early highlights of PVP in Diablo 4 was trying to erase the idea that PVP must be fair,” Piopiora explained. “I know it can be a scary thing to say to people. When you think of PVP in the open world, you do not always come across an enemy in an ideal circumstance with your chills available to you, and you have full health, with your potions and everything. Sometimes you can even be in a fight with another creature. We think the ebb and flow of that kind of PVP battle actually feels good in Diablo 4 right now. ”

The environment will also affect PVP situations. Based on your class, building and type of terrain, players will experience a dynamic form of combat where no two situations are exactly alike. Or at least that’s the developer’s goal with the new system.

“We are not trying to suggest that each class should be exactly parallel when starting at a fixed position apart,” said Piopiora. “It is never clear who will win in a match. We want to make sure that there are many circumstances in the environment, which make it possible for players to feel that they can succeed in some situations and fail in others, and always feel that there is an opportunity the next time they come back to play.

With more emphasis on the world itself, your class ends up playing an important role in determining your odds of winning a given PVP match.

“Another big difference between Diablo 4 and previous titles is the verticality we’ve added,” said Careena Kingdom, chief animator for Diablo IV. “A barbarian can actually jump off a cliff unlike anyone else who has to climb down the cliff. It provides a very interesting selection of methods you can hunt in the PVP areas. “

While the developers revealed a significant amount of information about their asymmetric PVP system, there is still a lot to learn about the complete details. We can expect more information about Diablo 4’s PVP system in the near future.
