At a glance, Biomutant, with its anthropomorphic protagonist and cartoon exclamation, can look out during combat, but it's a serious open-world action RPG that draws inspiration from a variety of sources. Described as a "post-apocalyptic kung fu fable" by developer Experiment 101, Biomutant players place in the role of a mutant animal, beginning with an attempt to save the Tree of Life from a plague that poison the land.
We got the chance to play Biomutant on Gamescom 2018 and talk to the game's creative director, Stefan Ljungqvist, who told us a little more about the title and explained some of the influences behind it. The demo begins with a look at the punctuation system. Players will be able to customize the main character's appearance (down to the size of the fangs and fur color) and attributes at the beginning of the adventure, which will determine how their statistics grow.
Shortly thereafter, we had to try out a combat system that blends melee attacks and long distance gunplay into a mix that looks and feels surprisingly reminiscent of Devil May Cry. This is not a coincidence; Ljungqvist says Capcom's action series ̵
Publisher THQ Nordic has not announced a release date for Biomutant, but the game is slated to hit PS4, Xbox One and PC sometime next summer.
