Belkin wireless charger sold by Apple is recalled for fire hazard

Belkin voluntarily remembers its Portable Wireless Charger + Stand Special Edition which was sold in Apple stores and online on Apple and Belkin’s websites due to fire and shock safety risks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, no incidents or damage have been connected to the charger, and the fault will only affect chargers sold between July 2020 and October 2020.

The wireless charging stand has a capacity of 10,000 mAh and can charge at 10W speed for phones that support it, but a problem with the “power supply unit” can cause the unit to overheat and leave it vulnerable to catch fire or shock people. Belkin advises anyone who has purchased the device to stop using it and unplug it. The company will also issue refunds to anyone who owns an affected charger.

In the big scheme for Apple̵

7;s iPhones, wireless charging has only been available since the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X in 2017. Apple announced AirPower at the same event, a wireless charging mat that was to charge several devices simultaneously, but it was eventually canceled because it did not met Apple’s “high standards”. Rumors later pointed to problems with overheating of the charging coils on the device as part of the motivation for Apple to cancel. All this to say, wireless charging is more difficult than it seems, and Belkin’s recall is another example of problems that can arise in a deceptively simple product.

If you own a charger that is affected by the recall, you can submit a refund request form on Belkin’s support page.
