After updating to iOS 14 or MacOS 11 Big Sur you have probably experienced yours AirPods random switching between your Apple devices. The new automatic switching feature will make your life easier, but for many – including yours really – it’s annoying.

In theory, the new feature will be able to identify which Apple device you want to use AirPods with in real time. For example, if you stream music on your iPhone and you start playing a video on your iPad, AirPods should switch to iPad. But in reality, the feature is somewhat finicky. I know I’ve had problems with my iPhone taking over my AirPods connection when I unlock it while listening to music on my iPad.

Fortunately, there is a way to turn off the feature. Just be sure to follow the steps described below on all Apple devices you use AirPods with, or at a minimum, the devices you do not want AirPods to automatically switch between.

Turn off automatically turn on a Mac

Connect AirPods to your Mac and follow these steps:

1. Open System selection.
2. Select bluetooth.
3. Click Options next to the name of the AirPods.
4.Click the drop-down menu Connect this Mac.
5. Select When last connected to this Mac and then click Finished and close System selection.

When auto-switching is turned off on all of your Apple devices, AirPods connect to the last device they were connected to when you turned them on, just as they did before iOS 14. To start using them with another Apple device, your devices, you can switch to them by selecting them in the AirPlay section of Control Center.
