Asus is no stranger to putting two monitors on a laptop, but for its next gaming phone, Asus seems to be pushing some limits by putting a small secondary screen on the back of the upcoming ROG Phone 5.
Admittedly, the idea of having a bonus display on the back of a phone is a bit silly, but comes from one the phone line aimed at players where Asus has already added RGB lighting, transparent air vents and several USB-C ports, sticking on a small second screen is actually not that extreme.
In a short video on Weibo discovered by GSMArena, The ROG Phone 5 appears to have a small dot-matrix-style screen placed diagonally across its back so you can see alerts or create small custom messages that you can see even while the phone is on your face. In some ways it is the natural progression for one phone series that have slowly accumulated brighter and brighter RGB lighting over the past three years.
Furthermore, apart from a gimmicky second screen, teasers for the ROG Phone 5 released by Asus show a rather interesting device with an almost frameless design, and reputation specifications that include a massive 6000 mAh battery, 65 watt fast charging and support for 144Hz screen. If you’re wondering ROG Phone 4 it was most likely skipped because of number 4 is considered unlucky throughout Asia.
However, the potential surprise for interested buyers is that while Asus usually launches its new flagship phone sometime in late summer or early summer, this year it looks like ROG Phone 5 could be announced as early as the first quarter of 2021.
Unfortunately, while we are still waiting for an official announcement, there is still other information about Asus’ next gaming phone thin. But as someone who thought Asus should lean even more into its exaggerated game aesthetics after reviewing ROG telephone 3, you can bet I’ll keep an eye on this next issue.
