Powerful Chromebooks are still relatively rare, but Asus seems to be changing that. Chrome unboxed reports that Asus has quietly introduced the Chromebook Flip CX5400, a 14-inch convertible laptop that provides performance that is hard to find in some thin and light Windows computers, let alone a Chrome OS device.

The new Asus Chromebook runs on a 2.1 GHz Core i7-1160G7 processor that should be fast while using low power – CU notes that the chip is designed for laptops without a fan, but it is not clear that this is the case here. You also get healthy 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD and two Thunderbolt 4 ports to complement Wi-Fi 6 support, Bluetooth 5 and a microSD card reader.
You’ll also find an included pen for drawing on the Asus Chromebook’s 1080p touchscreen, not to mention Harmon Kardon speakers to help the TV marathon. The system is quite light for the size of 3.1 kg, although the 720p webcam will not span frequent video chats.
The catch is the price. Asus currently lists the Chromebook Flip CX5400 for $ 1,049.99, and there are currently no downrange models. That makes it a better value (at least pure hardware) than many conventional laptops with the same price. If you’re thinking of buying a Chromebook for Steam games or just want an uncompromising Chrome OS device, this might be on your list.
