Apple may be working on a brand new variant of its industry-leading Apple Watch, which may include a more rugged cover designed specifically for people who indulge in extreme sports such as rock climbing. It is according to a Saturday report from Bloomberg, which quoted people who are familiar with the case.
The new Apple Watch variant is sometimes called Explorer Edition by the company, the report says, and it can contain a rubberized shell and provide greater impact resistance than current models, which include the flagship Apple Watch, cheaper Apple Watch SE and branded versions from Hermes and Nike.
Bloomberg’s sources said that Apple has talked about introducing the Explorer edition no earlier than 2021 or 2022. The sources also emphasize that, like any product that is still under development, this gadget may eventually be canceled or delayed. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Apple Watch dominates the smartwatch category with a market share of 40%, Bloomberg notes.
