Apple seems to be moving further in the development of a collapsible iPhone, according to new rumors. The company has apparently asked Foxconn, the largest iPhone supplier, to make two prototype collapsible cases with screens.

As reported by Tom’s Guide on Sunday, citing Taiwanese website United Daily NewsApple’s two prototypes reflect two very different approaches to folding phones in the industry. Tom’s Guide says that one of the designs is similar Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, which lets us remember, has a flexible screen with folds in the middle and can be folded. The other is closer Microsoft’s Surface Duo, the expiration notes, a device with two screens that resembles a book and is held together by a hinge.

It’s not clear if Apple is working on two separate folding phones, or if they are testing different ideas for the final new type of iPhone, according to Tom’s guide.

Add that to a recent patent application published Thursday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office – which was filed in April last year – and you can not help but be extraordinarily curious about what Apple is doing with this site. The application, entitled “Folding Electronic Devices With Geared Hinges”, describes a device that can be folded inwards and outwards.

An electronic device has a folding screen. The first and second parts of an electronic device housing for the device can be joined by means of a hinge. A flexible display can overlap the first housing part and the second housing part and can bend along a bending axis when the first and second housing parts are rotated relative to each other by means of the hinge, ”it is stated in the abstract.

This is not Apple’s first patent application that seems to be related to folding phones, and probably will not be the last. A patent application for one has also been filed self-healing screen as well as one that allows it two screens to work seamlessly as one when they are close to each other.

Just because the company has filed patents and because the reputation factory is buzzing, does not mean that any of the ideas or designs are a done deal. Some may never be made. Although we believe that Apple will eventually make a foldable phone, it may end up being different than anything we have speculated about when it finally arrives here. Still, it never hurts to imagine the possibilities.
