Only Apple Authorized Resellers will now be allowed to sell Apple and Beats products on Amazon Marketplace.
Currently, many of these Apple products are either unavailable on Amazon or sold only through the third-party market at varied prices and terms. Amazon already sells direct some Apple devices, such as MacBook laptops and Beats headphones.
"Amazon is constantly working to improve customer experience, and one of the ways we do this is by increasing the range of products we know customers want," an Amazon spokesman said in a statement on Friday. "We are looking forward to expanding our selection of Apple and Beat products globally. "
With the new agreement, customers should expect to see a larger selection of new Apple products and at standard prices. Also, the deal gives a big win for Amazon right in front of the holiday shopping season, it provides more electronics from a leading device maker with highly sought after products. For Apple, the deal can help sell more devices across the world.
The agreement also points to the relationship between the two technological giants, as Amazon removed the Apple TV video streams from its website in 2015, when. At the same time last year, Amazon said that it was also bringing Google Chromecast streamers back, but they are still unavailable by shaky connections with Google.
"We work with Amazon to improve the experience for Apple customers on their website," said Apple spokesperson Nick Leahy, "and we look forward to the customers having a great way to buy iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and more. "
The time of the deal poses questions, said eMarketer analyst Andrew Lipsman, adding that Amazon'sin its last quarter could have been a motivator for the company on its way into holiday. He said that Apple could face some risk of giving sales data to Amazon.
"But the real threat it is in Amazon to introduce a competing product. I want to say that Apple is pretty safe there," he said.
The event includes some warnings. Apple's HomePod smart speaker, competing against Amazon's own Echo devices, is not included. Amazon does not list HomePod or the rival Google home speakers.
"We make decisions about product range all the time, based on terms and a large number of other factors," said Amazon's spokesman for leaving HomePod. Independent sellers who list new and used Apple products on Amazon will have these listings removed after January 4, 2019. These sellers must now apply to Apple to become authorized Amazon dealers. An email to sellers about this change expired just after the agreement was signed.
The agreement does not affect Amazon's Renewed Program, which sells Certified Refurbished Electronics.
The change will make Apple and Amazon have greater control over stocks and prices on Apple products. However, smaller sellers and people who flip iPhones right after they go for sale are likely to be harmed by the deal. Customers who trade for used (but not refurbished) Apple products can also find a much more limited selection on Amazon. In both cases, these sellers and customers will be more likely to go to competing websites like eBay instead.
Amazon has already added more restrictions to its marketplace over the years, making it more difficult for small sellers to set up Amazon products if they do not work directly with the brands they list. Amazon inked a similar partnership with Nike last year that allowed both companies to reduce Amazon fakes and gain more control over unauthorized third party sales of Nike products.
Independent sellers with Apple stocks in Amazon warehouse after January 4th must make a cancellation order, with Amazon to refund return or deposit fees until early February. These sellers will not be able to send more Apple products to Amazon stores from December 1st.
