Over the next few weeks, Apple will offer customers in a select number of US states the opportunity to purchase a wide range of their products at no sales tax.
Each year, select states offer businesses and consumers an incentive not to have VAT as a way to help increase sales, and are usually aimed at helping families reduce the cost of shopping back at school. The dates for each state are different, and the selection of states this year is relatively small. Only purchases made during a state’s specific holiday are without state sales tax.
The policies around each state also vary. Alabama, for example, which holds its sales-free tax holiday between July 16 and 18, requires that the total selling price for all items remain below $ 750. Apple products, including Macs, iPads and iPod touches, are eligible, in as well as accessories like keyboard, mouse, Apple Pencil and more.
Missouri, which runs the holiday between August 6 and 8, has a higher limit of $ 1500 and the addition of more accessories, including printers, routers, RAM upgrades, Apple TV and more. South Carolina, which shares a vacation with Missouri, has no boundaries and includes tax-free purchases of earbuds, headphones and flash drives, but only for students. Virginia has a $ 60 limit on cell phone chargers and batteries.
