Mysteriously, Apple began to mention AirPower from its site after the iPhone event in September 2018. Around that time, the author John Gruber plugged in, suggested that AirPower had overheating problems and might have been "scrubbed". This means that AirPower was too hot while trying to charge three devices at once.
"There are engineers who looked at AirPower's design and said it can never work, thermal … I think they either have to go all the way back to the drawing board and start with a completely different design or they have decided to give up and they just don't want to say it, "Gruber said at the time.
AirPower would be promising for people who buy many Apple products. Instead of having to plug in an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, all three could just be deleted on a pillow and charged wirelessly. For AirPods, Apple would need to launch a new wireless charging case, which can still be included in an up-to-date model in the future.
Apple has been open to pushing wireless accessories in recent years. The company removed the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 in 201
At this time, it seems likely that AirPower has been canceled or indefinitely delayed. An Apple spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
