Amazon responds to reports that MMO New World is drawing expensive RTX 3090 cards • Eurogamer.net

“We think this is related to driver settings and frame rate limiters”.

Yesterday saw the beta launch of Amazon’s much delayed MMO New World, and early gameplay reports have generally been positive. Significantly smaller, however, is the growing number of posts from gamers who say that New World has also succeeded in drawing its expensive RTX 3090s graphics cards – a problem Amazon has now gone a way of acknowledging on its official support forum.

7;s potentially hardware-breaking capabilities first appeared on MMO’s dedicated sub-reddit. “I have just bricked a 3090 in the main menu after setting the graphics quality to medium and pressing save,” wrote user greyone78. “Can’t believe it. Anyone else had a catastrophic failure like this?”.

Several responses appear to confirm that yes, this is not an isolated issue, and further reports of RTX 3090 malfunctions after playing New World (primarily appearing to affect cards made by EVGA) began to spread to Twitter and beyond, along with speculation about the problem may be the result of sharp peak and overheating caused by unlimited frame rates in the game menus.

For a while, Amazon remained silent about the issue, but a post from a customer service representative at the New World’s Game Support Forum has now acknowledged that the MMO can cause 100% GPU usage on EVGA RTX 3090 graphics cards, pointing to “driver settings and frame rate limiters” . “

The representative offered two solutions in his post, suggesting that RTX 3090 users disable overrides in the card driver settings and set FPS to 60 in the Visuals settings before restarting the New World game client. “This will help prevent problems with GPU usage,” the representative explained.

In response to the post, some users have suggested that overheating and crash issues persist (on a variety of cards, not just the specified EVGA model) even with default settings enabled and the frame rate limited to 60 frames per second. As such, owners of high-end graphics cards may still want to exercise some caution and wait for further updates from Amazon if they are considering putting the New Worlds beta through their paces.
