Apple Music Comes To Amazon's Echo Smart Speakers With Alexa – Finally !
Amazon and Apple will make the streaming service available to current Apple Music subscribers or potential customers starting the week on December 17th.
As a subscriber to Apple Music, you've always had solutions to stream Apple's service through an echo, especially by pairing your phone or tablet via Bluetooth to the speaker. What you could not do, however, was to ask Alexa to play the specific music you were in the mood to hear and you were quite limited to volume and game controls.
The deal between Apple and Amazon will now let you make full use of Alexa with Apple Music: "Alexa, Games Bruce Springsteen," "Alexa, Play Beats 1 Radio," "Alexa, Play My Chill Playlist" , or for that matter, Alexa has played some of the 50 million tracks that fills the Apple Music directory.
"Given the size and scale of Apple Music, it has been one of the most sought after features in the past three or four years since we've had Echo and Alexa out there," said Dave Limp, Amazon.com Senior Vice President of Units and services. Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services, Eddy Cue, says engineers have been in for a six months.
The news comes just under a year after the Amazon Prime Video app was made available on Apple TV.
For Apple, you can reserve a place in the echo of the strong battle against Global Spotify. "The Swedish company recently showed that it had reached 87 million paid subscribers.
By comparison, in The end of July when the last played prayers, Apple said that it had more than 50 million listeners who included paid customers and those who spent a three month trial.
Amazon, which has its own ambitions through Amazon Music, just want to say in general that in August there were "tens of millions of paid customers" and that the number of hours streamed globally on Amazon Music with Alexa-enabled devices more than doubled what it was in the same period the year before.
There is no special rate to try Apple Music on the echo. You get three months free, same as other places, after which you pay $ 9.99 a month for an individual subscription, $ 4.99 as a student or $ 14.99 for a family plan that covers up to six people.
From the Amazon Alexa app on your phone, you can choose Apple Music and connect your account to an echo, just as you might do via the Spotify app or other streaming options. If you choose to make Apple Music the default music service, Alexa will play the song, artist or playlist of your choice, on request or, for that matter, Apple's Beats 1 Radio, without having to fix Alexa specifically. to Apple Music. If Apple Music is not standard, you must say, "Alexa plays X on Apple Music ."
If you have an echo or echo spot, Amazon's Alexa speakers are on display, you'll see cover art when playing a song through Apple Music. What you do not want to see is song lyrics, a feature Amazon has for some Amazon music tracks on these devices.
All techies want a piece, make it a part of you – meaning they want you in their respective ecosystems. But Limp says that "a customer's home is not homogeneous and thinking about it in that regard will not be careful … From the beginning, Amazon has equipped one of our basic tenets on customer selection. We sell many Apple products and are very happy for that. The fact that you can have certain products and services work with each other and sometimes have products that compete or overlap well. This is not a winning-all-environment. "
Apple's Cue agrees: "One of the things we've always believed in music – and this goes back to the iTunes days – is to try to make music services as far as possible. We started by making it available on Windows, and you remember when hell frozes over. We've had it available on Sonos devices (and) Android devices. We love the ability of people who have Echos to hear and gain full experience with Apple Music on their devices. "
Still, while Apple Music comes to Amazon Echo, for now the event is not e & # 39; t mutually so that the Amazon Music service is not available on Apple's Siri-controlled HomePod speaker. (You will be able to stream Amazon Music to HomePod through AirPlay.)
Cue added, as a page, that HomePod had its best week since the February launch.
From a privacy perspective, once you enable Apple Music on your Alexa app, what's shared with Amazon are the names of playlists in your library. If you disconnect your Apple Music account from Alexa, Amazon will delete the playlist names within 90 days.
"It's the only data Amazon stores about you related to this," said Cue. "This is done in a privacy-friendly way, we are very pleased and would not have done otherwise."
