Acer’s Ryzen 3 Chromebook Spin 514 appears on Best Buy and MEH

The latest Chromebooks powered by AMD’s Ryzen C-Series APUs offer compatible options for Intel-powered devices and who doesn’t love options. That said, our first hands-on with a pair of Ryzen 5 Chromebooks gives us an indication that Intel’s Comet Lake processors are still the king of the ground when it comes to raw horsepower, but that’s fine. If Chromebook manufacturers can offer the same great features and built-in quality, but swap an Intel for an AMD, and it saves consumers a lot of money, it’s a victory.

Unfortunately, I do not think we will see the huge price differences between AMD and Intel-powered devices, and a new list from Best Buy reinforces my theory. We recently took Acer̵

7;s new Chromebook Spin 514 for a test drive, and while it may be a well-built machine with the appropriate power, it wow me no more than devices like the Spin 713 or even the Lenovo Flex 5. The model we tested was the Ryzen 5 with 8GB of RAM and yes, it’s powerful enough for business users, but it did not perform as well as Intel’s 10th generation Core i5, and that’s a problem because I almost guarantee that the 514 we tried will be the price above the Spinn 713.

Anyway, back to the Best Buy listing. This morning, Best Buy added an upcoming entry for the Ryzen 3 Acer Chromebook Spin 514. It comes with a weird 4GB of RAM and just 64GB of storage. Now I know this is enough for casual users who just surf the web, check their bank account and watch YouTube, but let’s take a look at the price. The model currently listed on Best Buy has an MSRP of $ 479.99. It’s a decent bit of change less than Spin 713, but at the same time there is a lot of compromise here.

Let’s first talk about these processors. Reference points are not everything, but they give us a good measurement of what we can expect from a unit. The Ryzen 3 from AMD is not dull, and it even hangs very close to the Core i5 from the 10th generation when it comes to single-core scores. The problem is that AMD has two cores and four threads. Intel rocks four cores and eight threads. As a result, the Intel processor doubled more than dual-core speeds in Geekbench 4 tests.

AMD Ryzen 3 Geekbench 4 result (4 GB RAM)
Intel Core i5-10210U Geekbench 4 result (8GB RAM)

Then this special model offered at Best Buy has only 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of eMMC storage. Now we have claimed that most users will not notice any difference between the eMMC and NVMe offered by Acer’s Spin 713. The storage on the Spin 713 is still faster, and it comes with 128 GB. Just saying. However, RAM is a big deal. Premium Chromebooks should have 8GB of RAM. I understand that this is probably the middle part of the low end for this device, but keep in mind that it is priced at almost $ 500. For that price you can get a Core i3 Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 with 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage and any accessory right now on Amazon.

Other than that, the Spin 713 has the 3: 2 screen which is quite bright and super crazy. The 514 is not a bad screen, but it’s 16: 9, and it does not have the pop you find on Spin 713. You get a backlit keyboard and USI compatibility with both Chromebooks, but the AMD-powered 514 is a hard sell In my opinion when you can often get Spin 713 or HP x360 14c for as little as $ 529. Even at the retail price of $ 629, I have to recommend Spin 713 over this 14-inch AMD model from Acer. Hopefully, when the stiffer models arrive, they will be more in line with the prices we see from Lenovo’s discounted ThinkPad C13 Yoga. For now, I have to take a hard look at the consumer model Acer Chromebook Spin 514. In any case, the Ryzen 3 version of this Chromebook is scheduled to launch on March 21 at Best Buy, and you can check out the details below.
