A year later, Apple's innovative AirPower wireless charger is just vaporware – BGR

We are used to seeing Apple delays these days, both in terms of new hardware or software features. Remember when Apple fanboy bloggers used to mock other companies to advertise products that were not ready to send yet? AirPods, iPhone X, HomePod, and iPhone XR are just some of the devices Apple has delayed in recent history.

Some of the coolest software features Apple mentioned during their iPhone event earlier this week, including Apple Watch 4's ECG support or the new iPhones eSIM functionality, will not be available at launch and will instead come as updates somewhere down the road. But AirPower is something else. Apple's daring vision of using a single device for wireless charging of an iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods was at the same time an exhibition program on Wednesday. And it starts to look a lot like vaporware.

Apple announced AirPower in September last year, over a year ago, and we realized that the accessories would be available in the months that followed. But it did not happen. Not only that, but Apple just kept its 2018 iPhone event without mentioning the accessories. What's even worse is that Apple is wondering that the device was never announced initially. As Apple Insider points out, Apple has deleted almost all traces of AirPower from the site. Here's the only thing that comes up when you're looking for AirPower on Apple.com:? 19659002]

It's not like AirPower is a must-have product, and there are many wireless chargers for iPhone. Well, they will not charge iPhone, Watch and AirPods at the same time, but it's not exactly a necessity. The lack of bringing the product to the market suggests that there are things that even Apple can not do. And it's a rare sight for a company known for its secret to uncover a product that's not nearly close to being ready to hit stores. Unlike others, Apple is usually only public about products that will be released soon after disclosure. The AirPower Charger seems that it will not hit any stores at any time.

The fact that Apple is going through so much trouble to avoid talking about AirPower had a secondary effect. It stopped Apple from mentioning a remarkable upgrade for the iPhone XS phones – faster wireless charging. From Apple's iPhone XS Press Release:

The front and back glass design has the most durable glass anywhere in a smartphone with improved scratch resistance while the glass provides faster wireless charging. iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max reaches a new level of splash and water resistance IP68 for up to 2 meters for 30 minutes and protects against everyday emissions, including coffee, tea and soft drinks.
