Nubia, a ZTE brand, introduced this week its new top-topping smartphone equipped with front and rear screen and Qualcomm's high-end SoC. The new Nubia X has a rare 93.6% ratio of display and body to the primary LCD display, maximizing the screen's real estate while offering a serious performance. The phone will probably take a few eyes, but what remains to be seen is how useful the other screen is and how will it affect battery life.
Impressive on the outside
The two displays are naturally the key selling the point of Nubia X. The primary display is a 6.26 inch IPS LCD monitor with a resolution of 2280 × 1080, a 19: 9 format and has no notch (since there is no camera). The secondary display is a 5.1
Nubia X has a CNC machined frame with Deep Gray, Black Gold, or Sea Light Blue Surfaces. The chassis has two side-mounted fingerprint readers, allowing the phone to be activated from both sides. It is noteworthy that, despite packing two displays, Nubia X is neither thicker nor heavier than competitors. The phone has an 8.4 mm z-height and weighs 181 grams.
The smartphone is based on the Qualcomms Snapdragon 845 SoC that integrates eight Kryo 385 kernels running at 1.80-2.65 GHz, the Adreno 630 GPU, a 64-bit LPDDR4X memory controller, Qualcomms X20 LTE modem, and so on. Right now, the S845 Qualcomm's flagship SoC is for smartphones, so from the processing and general features point of view, Nubia X is on par with its competitors from other companies. SoC is paired with 4 or 8GB LPDDR4X memory, as well as 64 or 128GB of storage. Interestingly, Nubia claims that it uses graphs to cool down the most important electronic components of Nubia X.
For the battery, the handset is equipped with a 3.800 Li-Po battery that is in line with the battery capacity of the top-of-the range smartphones from other makers. In the meantime, keep in mind that Nubia X has a second display and therefore uses more than competing devices. Although OLED does not consume much power, they still eat something, so it will be interesting to see how long Nubia X will live on a load.
The Nubia X image processing capacity is limited to the reverse-facing dual camera setup. The main camera consists of a 24 MP sensor with a f / 1.7 aperture, followed by a 16 MP sensor with a f / 1.8 aperture and a dual-LED dual-tone flash (one of the LEDs is a soft light). As mentioned above, the camera is designed to be used for both normal and self-image images. The latter will obviously benefit from an advanced flash and high performance sensor, allowing Nubia X to become popular with those who are interested in selfies. Nubia claims that camera software can detect scenes and environments to adjust settings, but does not elaborate.
Next up is connection. The smartphone supports modern 4G / LTE networks, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 on the wireless side of things. In the case of physical interfaces, Nubia X has a USB Type C port for charging, but no 3.5mm connector for headphones.
Nubia sends X with Google Android 8.1 OS and its own Nubia 6.0 interface.
