Do you want to rent a sedan with five passengers? Anything a step up from the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord? There are many good annual deals out there. Maybe a Nissan Maxima in 2020? That’s $ 309 a month for 36 months and $ 3,859 down. Or a Toyota Avalon from 2021 for $ 389 for 36 months, with $ 3,688 due upon signing. Or a Lexus ES 350 in 2020 for $ 329 for 36 months, with $ 2899 down.
Or do you want to be a little adventurous? We’ll explain what that means in a moment.
The lease that caught my eye: A new Alfa-Romeo Giulia for $ 279 a month for 39 months, $ 2,278 due to signing without deposit.
And Giulia? For under $ 300 a month? And best of all, is it a lease? Because Alfa, since returning to the US, has not exactly garnered awards for build quality. Fortunately, it does not rank in the current Consumer Reports issue that has brand reliability, because, like eight other brands, there are not enough cars out there to collect data on.
But no arguments that in CR̵
But the other side of the coin: Consumer Reports gives Giulia two green arrows for owner satisfaction, which means owners like it, and apparently dealers fix the cars if they break down, quickly and satisfactorily.
Which should not be difficult. Every Alfa test car I have driven in the last three years has had at least one problem, in all cases except something minor and electric, such as a light that will not turn on or off. People at Fiat Chrysler have told me that things are better, and with a completely green ownership satisfaction, I have to believe them.
So when I say adventurous, I mean it in two ways: in the above reliability, and in the conventional Italian Alfa-Romeo sense, which means the car is fun to drive. Even the base model I’m talking about here, with a 2.0-liter, 280-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The interior is nicely presented; even the rear seats are surprisingly spacious.
The base 2020 car, which costs $ 40,695 with shipping, is well-equipped, including with collision warning and automatic braking standard. Mileage is 24 mpg city, 33 highway.
And apparently that’s enough. Alfa tells me in “my area”, there are 66 to choose from.
Car people who have not paid close attention to Alfa’s quality problems, see the car correctly as someone who handles superbly, and this car does. Non-car people think of the Alfa-Romeo brand in the same category as, for example, Maserati and Aston-Martin, and will think of you as a high roller until someone tells them that your car costs a little more than a loaded Toyota Camry XSE.
So if you want to impress people, put the hook quickly. Name the Formula 1 team. Just not the last time they won. I do not support Alfa-Romeo Giulia (pronounced Julia; do not embarrass yourself), but for $ 279 a month it will be on my favorite list.
