8 ingenious Instagram tips and tricks you did not know

Instagram is a fun social networking platform that is very easy to just open and use. But if you are looking for a little tweaking under the hood, there are some very clever tips, tricks, hints and hacks you can take advantage of to get even more out of the free service.

From stopping another Instagram user from knowing you’re online, to a painless way to add line breaks to your post text, we’ve put together a selection of things you may not know you can do on Instagram.

1. Stop another Instagram user from seeing when you are online

Instagram offers “restrict” functionality, which means you can make sure another user can not see when you are online or if you have read their messages.

In addition, the comments of everyone you restrict will only be visible to that person, although you can choose to view the comment by clicking “View Comment.”

You will also not receive any notifications of future comments from them.

To restrict someone on Instagram, open the profile you want to restrict and tap the three-point menu at the top right. Now press “Restrict” and follow the instructions.

If you want to block someone completely, you can always go to their profile, click on the three-point menu at the top right and select this option to do so.

2. Delete the embarrassing search log

No one needs to know that you had a late night on Instagram search and followed your celebrity infatuation / high school beau / nemesis / corgis wearing a tuxedo. Clearing your search history is quick and easy.

Go to your profile and click on the three-line menu at the top right of the screen. Click “Settings” and then “Security”, then select “Clear Search History” from the Security menu.

From the next screen, you can tap the “Remove All” option at the top right. Your search secrets are safe.

3. Move your favorite filters on Instagram to the top of the menu

Customizing your Instagram filters to move your most used favorite filters to the top of the list is easy, so you do not have to scroll through less popular choices to use them.

Once on the filter page for the Instagram posting process, just hold any filter and drag and drop it where you want it to appear in your list.

Arrange the stored items in the collection folders

When you save content on Instagram, you can only see that you have saved it, and it goes straight into your Saved area. By default, everything you save is grouped in the “All Posts” folder.

If you store content you want to return to, it is a good idea to create collection folders in the stored area to organize the material neatly. You can then access it quickly instead of flipping through pages of posts to find what you are looking for.

To add collection folders to the saved area, go to your profile and tap the three-line menu at the top right of the screen. Now tap Saved, which has a bookmark icon next to it. In the saved area, press the “+” button to create a new collection folder and name it. You can now add the posts you want to appear in that folder.

5. Attach positive comments to the top of your posts

You can attach up to three comments to the top of your posts to, in Instagram’s own words, “highlight positivity.”

To do this, see the post’s comments, and swipe left on the comment you like, then tap the needle icon to move it to the top of the list. Please note that when you post a comment, the person who wrote the comment will receive a notification.

6. Track inactive accounts

Instagram makes it easy for you to see Instagram accounts you may not need to follow, either because they have become inactive or their content is no longer of interest to you.

To see everything in one place, go to your profile, then click on the “Follow” link. On the next screen, you will see a clickable list of accounts you have “least interacted with.” This gives you the opportunity to review accounts you have had the least contact with in the last 60 days, which include not liking their posts or reacting to their stories.

Click through to see each account, and if you decide you no longer want to follow them, just click “Follow” and you will follow them.

7. Save the crazy catchy Reels soundtrack

If you hear music or other sound on an Instagram Reels clip that you absolutely love, you can easily save it for later listening, or to use it in your own Instagram Reels creation.

Just look at the bottom of the screen to scroll the audio information and click on it. This takes you through the information page for that sound.

8. Add line breaks quickly and easily

Instagram’s default keyboard, whether you comment or post, does not display the “Return” key, leaving many beginners on Instagram completely confused about how to add line breaks. It’s a super easy hack, but to get the return key displayed so you can add a line break and not post difficult, fixed chunks of readable text.

If you press the “123” key to enter the numeric menu, the return key suddenly appears. You can tap this to get the line break you need, then return to the alphabetical menu to continue typing.
