2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL Roadster’s high-tech cabin revealed

A new generation of the legendary Mercedes-Benz SL is just around the corner, but this time AMG is handling the development. As a result, the car will have a slightly revised name. It will be known as the Mercedes-Benz AMG SL Roadster, and it is set to make its debut later this year as a 2022 model.

Ahead of their debut in the world, Mercedes has released details. For example, we have already learned that the car will have four-wheel drive, have a lighter, stiffer chassis and return to an automatic soft roof. Now Mercedes has given a first look at the interior of the new SL Roadster.

The biggest change is a return to 2 + 2 seats, a configuration we have not seen since the R129 generation in the 1

990s. But as is the case with most 2 + 2 sports cars, the rear seats are only suitable for small children, and even then it can be cramped. In most cases, these seats will only serve as a nicely padded luggage rack.

There’s also a lot more technology, although the interior still perfectly blends traditional SL themes with performance and luxury, while giving a nod to the original 300SL with its minimalist look. A 12.3-inch digital screen acts as the instrument cluster and has a special visor to prevent reflections caused by sunlight – a must to drive with the top down.

An 11.9-inch portrait-style touchscreen, which we’ve already seen in some Mercedes models, sits in the center console as the main hub for infotainment. It has electrical adjustment so that drivers can avoid reflections caused by sunlight. Below the screen, there are a number of physical buttons that are used to control frequently used items. Complementing the dashboard is a sports steering wheel with several controls, as well as four air valves with jet turbine design.

A head-up screen will be on the selection list. It uses augmented reality to display relevant signals and actions three-dimensionally in the real driving situation and surroundings. The completion of the look is the metal grilles on the speakers that make up the Burmester sound system.

Buyers will be able to choose between standard and better reinforced AMG Performance seats. Nappa leather clothing with diamond padding and contrast stitching will be available.

Mercedes has not said anything about the drivelines of the new SL. There will likely be two launch options, both with mild-hybrid powertrains. One will probably be marked with an SL53 or SL55, and has about 430 hp. The other should be marked with an SL63 and pack more than 600 hp. Further down the track, we can look forward to an SL73 range-tops powered by an 800-plus-hp plug-in hybrid setup.

Production of the new SL will take place at Mercedes’ factory in Bremen, Germany, where the previous sixth-generation model was built.
