2019 Ram 1500 eTorque First Drive: Silent Saver



There is no payout time with V-6, as eTorque comes as standard on all new 2019 Rams equipped with the base engine. Such an appointment! (OK, the new model is $ 600 more expensive than the same Tradesman model but it also buys some other upgrades.) Interestingly, the engine generator is very different from that of Hemi. The V-6 was manufactured by the Continental supplier, it is rated at 12 hp and 90 lb-ft, and it is mounted in front of the engine with the pulley pointing backwards. For this reason, the internal cooling fans used on a typical AC power will not work, so it is water-cooled using its own dedicated cooling circuit. The V-8's Magneti Marelli device assembles conventionally (pulley pointing forward) near the top of the engine where the air cooling works well. When we publish this report, final EPA certification is not yet available for V-6, but as with Hemi, eTorque is expected to increase the city and combined mpg numbers with 2 or 3 mpg each. 9-20 mpg city and 22-23 mpg highway with rear drive.

There's no way to carry out a relevant back-to-back test of V-6s with and without eTorque because the new truck has cut around 225 pounds and benefits from countless other improvements compared to the unassisted Ram 1500 "Classic" V-6. (Note that "Classic" models will be produced at the same time for at least the rest of this year and this is the only way to get a two-door regular cab Ram at that time.) I drove a Tradesman base and a more fresh 4×4 Big Horn- model, and both seemed to accelerate quickly and evenly. Compared with the V-8, this drive unit is programmed to tear a little more. Even light throttle acceleration, the roof looks regularly up to 2000 or 3000 rpm. While torquier V-8 will loafing along in 2000. So it seems a bit harder, but gets you there as fast, at least when it's loose. Auto stop / start events are as smooth and unobtrusive as they are in Hemi eTorque.

For those with modest payload and tow needs, this far more useful V-6 is worth a long, hard look.

Alternators only draw modest power from the accessory drive, but eTorque's engine generators use the belt to brake and accelerate these large trucks so the belt must be bigger (eight ribs up from six), stronger and must wrap longer on the pulley than on most alternators. It also requires a tightening on both sides to keep things tight as it transitions from driving to driving. ETorque Hemi also receives a larger crankshaft disc that enhances the engine / generator's influence on it. Belt routing is designed to throw water before it reaches the e-machine, and if sliding is detected, input / output requirements are reduced until the belt dries. This belt is designed to last the life of the truck-10 years / 150,000 miles minimum. The V-8 eTorque system uses a separate belt for the water pump.

LG Chem supplies the 12 pouch-styled battery cells consisting of 30-pound suitcase size 430 watt-hour battery pack. It is mounted to the rear of the cab and contains a DC-to-DC converter to satisfy the usual electrical loads and charge the 12 volt starter battery. The system uses only 130 watts of this capacity to ensure it lasts the truck load. In terms of mass, the entire eTorque system adds 90 pounds to a Hemi and 120 to a Pentastar V-6 (the water cooling circuit stands for the difference).

Fun Fact: The work on these systems originally started for an application on the now-run 200 model four-cylinder sedan. Wrangler's eTorque system is closely related to Pentastar V-6 and is also supplied by Continental.
